I have a Toshiba laptop running on XP pro. Warranty is up in Sept so it is about 3 years old.

Most recently the curser on my touchpad has started to move from the bottom left corner of the page diagonally to the top right corner of the page.

It does this all on it's own. I most certainly have NOT started this behavior.

Looking at the Toshiba, Windows, and other pages relavent to the touchpad I have seen many others with the same problem.

However, no answers have been given to the many persons
who are suffering from this problem.

Toshiba does not help at all. I was told to completely erase my entire system ....

Could it be that the touchpads "go bad" after about 3 years and it is an ALPS manufacturer malfunction?

Since this forum has always been the best, I am bringing this situation to your expertise.

    Thanks.

You could check your mouse or touch pad settings and drivers in the Control Panel. Touch pad or other internal cursor programs are added to a laptop. You can get updated or replacement programs from the laptop manufacturer. Did you get any CD's with the laptop. May have the touch pad driver on it.

    Touchpad

I have already done all of that. I talked with Toshiba and they wanted me to completely wipe my system and start from scratch with a clean hard drive. I do think that was bad advice.

After talking with Toshiba, I suspected a hardware issue with the touchpad but Toshiba did not suggest that.

I did download the touchpad driver and that didn't work.

There is not a listing of this touchpad in the control panel.

Many others have had the same problem. There has to be an answer, but I cannot find it.

Have you looked in Control Panel->MOUSE for the touchpad settings?

    Touchpad

Control Panel , MOUSE only shows PS/2 mouse which is not a touchpad.

Nowhere on the Toshiba are there any settings for the touchpad.

There is not a listing for the touch pad in the control panel. It is listed in the mouse section of the control panel. It should show under Device Settings tab.

I promise you, there is not a listing for the touchpad in the Device Manager -- only for a PS/2

    I believe you :)

Reading through your thread I thought I would check out my HP laptop and ....

No reference to the Synaptics touchpad under Control Panel > Mouse although the Touchpad works perfectly.

    My solution .....

Downloaded Synaptics driver from HP and installed - there is now a listing in Mouse Properties for Device Settings against the Synaptics logo (screenshot)

Why the driver went AWOL I have no idea - may have happened when I loaded Intellipoint software for a wireless notebook mouse months ago.

Go to the Toshiba website and download the software for the touchpad - may not be Synaptics and install. That should resolve the issue.

I have more than once downloaded the Toshiba mouse driver.

I really don't think it is a good idea to download a non-Toshiba driver.

The problem is that for whatever reason, Toshiba does not load the touchpad driver anywhere. Only the PS/2.

    Thanks

Do you by any chance have a PS2 or USB mouse attached to the lappy?

    PeteC,

I did mis-speak. I meant the ALPs driver.

However, the link you gave me was different from the one the Toshiba tech had me download. AND, your driver did load into program files: C:\TOSAPINS\COMPS1\ALPS Pointing Device Driver0 and another file: AlpsPointing.temp.

THere is no explanation of how to use, etc. or I can't find it.

The Tosapins file only shows a device that allows you to switch between different pointing devices.

The newest download that you suggested did not load into device drivers.

Now do I have both drivers loaded?

    The problem is still existing.

    Thanks again.

Thanks for your reply, Steve Jones, but I don't have a USB mouse attached -- but am getting one ready since this "pointer drifting" problem is getting worse.

Somehow, the erratic pointer behavior has stopped.

However, I have decided that the reason for the erratic pointer is due to: a too hot laptop and/or a too well used touchpad and/or a touchpad which is failing due to a hardware malfunction.

In any case, this computer is crashing and I have ordered a new HP this time and will have at least 3 years I hope before the touchpad crashes.

Thanks, all of you, for your help.
