If you can't disable SATA Native Support (that is what it's actualy called) in the BIOS (and in many of the HP notebooks this is not possible) then you should either slipstream the drivers onto an XP cd with nLite, or try to load them during install from an external floppy or USB stick if that is at all possible.

The drivers you'll need are in the chipset, which you can get from here:

To exctract the drivers from the softpaq, install WinRAR or 7zip, right click the file and extract. Since I myself never slipstreamed an XP cd, I unfortunatly cannot tell you exactly what to do, but my guess would be you'll want the nvata.inf file from there.

All other drivers you need are here:

    Good luck!

Well you can always try as long as you have your recovery discs burned. You can always go back to the OS it came with. Plus if you want to make Vista a bit lighter on the system you can always disable some stuff, like aero view, Windows Search (indexing service) and Superfetch. But that is on your own risk! :)
