    HI,

I'm using OE6 and it has just developed a freeze whenever I click on the Send/Receive button.

I can wade through all the emails and folders no problem but as soon as I click on Send/Receive it freezes every time.
This isue has developed into something major as when I go to Network connections and enable Local Area Connection the screen "flashes" blue with some script I don't get time to read and the PC shuts down then reboots.

I have made several attempts to do a system restore but at each restore point I select it will not restore but just reloads me back to my current settings.

On visiting this site http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;299357 I utilized their software to "automatically" reset the TCP/IP settings but that has made no difference

Previous to this I had an issue resolved.... http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=73360 and am not sure if any of that has introduced this problem.

First set the computer so that it does not automatically reboot on System Failure .....

Control Panel > System > Advanced > Startup and Recovery > Settings - then post the error message from the blue screen.

Also look in Event Viewer for System/Application events flagged when you hit Send/Receive and post here (double click on an event to open and on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard - paste in a post here.

    Thanks Pete,
    I'll start here....BLUE SCREEN

    Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Then there is a lot of advisory info you may be familiar with relating to new hardware installations though there have been none in this instance. It finishes off with....Technical Information.
    *** STOP: 0x000000D1 (0x0501010B,0x00000002,0x00000001,0x8572902D)

On another ocassion when I attempted to enable the Local Area Connection I get the Blue Screenagain with this readout.
    *** STOP: 0x0000008E (0xC0000005,0x85A1201D,0xF6CEF800,0x00000000)
I suppose I would get a different readout each time

Unfortunately there are more causes of STOP: 0x000000D1 errors than I have had hot dinners :)

    FYI ....
However the poster here had a similar problem although his was on opening OE ....

    http://www.castlecops.com/p909374-Outlook_Express_causing_blue_screen_of_death.html

I suggest you check out the hard drive to get that possibility out of the way - use the disk diagnostic software from the driive manufacturer ....

    ExcelStore ....
    http://www.excelstor.com/en/download.asp
    Hitachi .....
    http://www.hitachigst.com/hdd/support/download.htm
    Samsung ....
    http://www.samsung.com/global/business/hdd/support/utilities/Support_HUTIL.html
    Seagate, Maxtor, Quantum .....
    http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/support/downloads/
    Western Digital ....
    http://support.wdc.com/download/

Even if that shows a clean bill of health I would still run chkdsk /r from a command prompt ....

    Start > Run > cmd > Enter

At the flashing cursor type cd\ > Enter

At the C:\ prompt type chkdsk /r > Enter and agree to running at next boot. Reboot.

Test Send & Receive in OE.

If the problem remains re-register OE and it's library files as detailled in An Outlook Express basic repair kit - note that regsvr32 msjava.dll will most likely fail as it is unlikely that you have msjava installed.

In any case look in Event Viewer ......
Click first on System to show the list of Events - look for Events flagged with a white cross on a red ground - timed when you attempted to send/receive. Double click on the event to open it and on the icon below the up/down arrow to copy to clipboard. Open a new post here, right click in the message pane > paste. The clipboard is 'invisible' and holds the last item you copied via the right click menu.

    Look also in Application.

I am in the process of doing a checkdisk now but is there a possibility that my Networker adapter in The Device Manager has something wrong with it as it comes up with a red cross through it and when I click on that Pawow Blue Screen shutdown......

    Chkdsk OK

Are you posting from the troublesome computer?

Red cross indicates the network adapter is disabled - can you right click on it > Uninstall?

If so reboot and let Windows detect it and load the drivers again.

G'day Roy - trust you had a good night :) Warmest day of the year I guess over here - 26+ deg C - very pleasant, but not conducive to anything energetic!
You were right - it's the Realtek network card driver which seems to be the problem. See if you can download the latest driver - or a fresh copy of the existing and install.

Ok, Here's what I've tried this morning and I am on the problem PC.

I thought perhaps that the Realtek Network Adapter might be the problem so I have disabled that and made my connection with USB D-Link ADSL Modem.

This has not overcome the issue though it "seems" to have stabilised and isolated more specifficaly the problem....My thoughts anyway.

OE will SEND email if I just drop down the SEND from the send/receive...I have tried that 3 times and it works..BUT do the same with the RECEIVE and FREEZE straightway..the whole PC locks up.

So ??? where do we go from here!
Looks like some sort of corruption in OE to my limited understanding.

OK..I have re-installed Realtek and it comes up Ok in Network connections and Device Manager...soooo no prob there now I guess..BUT OE still FREEZES on Receive.....????

I have 2 Network Adapters I have in device Manager Realtek RLT8139/810x Family Fast Ethernet NIC and VIA Rhine 11 Fast Ethernet Aaptor I have re-installed both of them and in Device Manager they come up as OK, however in Network Connections the Via Rhine says network cable unplugged and the "status and repair" are greyed out.

I still think it's something to do with the network cards - remind me of exactly which mobo you have and I can check out the manual.

If you go into Device Manager and Expand the Network Adaptors and then go to View > Show hidden devices are any of the hidden network adaptors flagged?

The VIA Rhine is probably for a network and if you don't have one cable unplugged is normal. You could try disabling it and seeing if the problem remains.
No blue screen so not crashing.

Did you reregister OE as I suggested earlier?

Two other things you may like to try .....

Create a new account using the same input data as for your existing account, but do not make a straight copy of your existing account ...

    Tools > Accounts > Add

Create a new Identity and set up the same account in that and try.

    Yes

Done still freezes in fact when I in a website under File clicked on the link to send to email even that froze OE.

    No
Under View by connection..both showed up.
I uninstalled Via Rhine and on reboot it came up OK in Device Manager but unplugged in Network Connections.
When I disabled Via Rhine in NC it comes up RedCross in DM.
    My MB is MSI PM8M-V

I can give this a shot but I doubt OE will give me sufficient time as it also just freezes up even if inactive.

Sorry it has taken me some time to get back but I have been waiting for BBS notifications that aren't coming through....so I just came back for a peek.

Seems either you are the only one brave enough to take this problem on or all the "lookers" feel that you are doing a great job.

Well I am rapidly running out of ideas and wish that there was some other input :)

I guess there is the possibility of Inbox/Outbox corruption .....

If you can create a couple of new folders - InboxOld and OutboxOld do so and drag the mails in Inbox and Outbox to these new folders. If that is not possible then they will be lost by the following action .....

Search for *.dbx - include hidden files and folders - with OE closed and delete Outbox.dbx. restart OE - a new Outbox will be created and test.

If no joy repeat (with OE closed) and delete Inbox.dbx, restart OE and test.

If successful you can drag the emails you moved back to their respective folders - assuming you were able to do that.

    Hi Pete,

I don't want to appear to be a smart ar***&## but I really can't see the logic in that if there is a FREEZE in OE without any activity by just being on that page for a few minutes.

Also the freeze when caused by my activity is ONLY generated in relation to a RECEIVE command....... "that is an IN issue "

But.. I can give it a shot.

Still, for whatever reason not receiving notifications from BBS and this is on my laptop on which I AM receiving and sending.

Thanks for all your trouble Pete.

Musta been a corrupt registry...whada ya think.
Reinstalled IE and OE still a FREEZE
    Uninstalled IE and OE.
Installed Firefox..I think thats the one.. anyway made no difference at all.

Did an XP repair......still the big FREEZE....soooooooooooo I figured it was either a hardware or software issue...brilliant deduction eh!

I figured if it was hardware then I'd lose my set up and as a repair didn't help...what the heck...go the full monty and strip down to barebones and hope the vunerables are protected.

Formatted the drive and reinstalled XP..great it's now working.....though I'm wondering if I should stick with IE and OE or go for an alternative.
Still on my laptop here...thankful for this as a backup.

That's great news, Roy - shame you had to reformat, but IMO that's a good thing once in a while :)

As to the cause - I'd be guessing, but I doubt it's a registry thing as the reinstall of IE/OE should have rewritten the registry entries.
