I moved a pc from one room to another and now when I try to go online it keeps saying "[Modem:MSP5900-U Modem on COM4] The modem has reported that there is no dial tone." I checked the phone jack with a telephone and it is working.I looked in device manager and it showed modem working correctly. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling modem. When looking in the device manager I noticed under ports that the communication port is COM1 and COM4 is not listed. Not sure if this part of the problem, but figured I'd give this info. Thanks in advance for any help.

Some modems have two connection for the phone line. LINE and PHONE. You want to hook up to the LINE.
Under Ports, COM4 would not be listed as it usually does not have a physical connection on the back of the computer. COM1 does.

I have tried it both on phone and line.I knew it should be on line but figured I would try it both ways.Could the problem be in the modem itself, even tho device manager says it it working correctly?

With no dial tone the Modem was not the problem. It was at that time either a bad cable or connection.

I tried uninstalling and reinstalling modem.

    Bad move.

A non-working Modem is quite often the results of the above.

It don't seem to care that the Device manager or other tests say it is OK.

You may have to remove the Modem from the Device manager ( while in safe Mode ).

    Shut the machine down.

    Physically remove modem.

    Restart windows with out Modem.

Shut down, plug Modem into another slot.

Restart and PRAY that Windows finds and allows you to install drivers for it.

If all else fails. Go get yourself an External; and put it on an external serial port. You will have a better modem anyway.

    Reseat Modem!

BillyBob's advice about trying another slot can't hurt.

Computers other than laptops don't like to be moved. As manufacturers have tried to cut costs, they use less steel in the case, and the steel that is there is much thinner than older units and as a direct result these cases flex alot more.

It is VERY common to have "Out of box" failure due to cards working loose during shipping (or movement). But since the case is usually well supported by the styro during shipping this is less likely than someone moving a case that is not in the box. - (AGP cards are extra bad because the socket is farther from backplain.)

After reseating in the slot of you choice, test for dialtone as follows. If the modem has 2 RJ11 jacks, insert the phone line from the wall jack into the LINE jack, then plug a phone cable into the PHONE jack and listen for dialtone. - If none replace cable and test again, if static, plug phone into wall jack to see if static is line noise or from modem passthru. If there is no static on wall jack but is present when connected thru modem, then modem has been spiked - (fried)

The most common cause for "no dial tone" is that the modems A/D converter has been spiked (had its ears burned off...) and it can't "hear" the dialtone. A lightening strike up to 30 miles away could be responsible.

BTW - Don't waste my time telling me about some megabuck surgeprotector - They WILL NOT protect your modem, there job is to keep your system from turning into a smoking pile of rubble when a serious hit occurs. - Consider that A/D converter to be a safety fuse that saved the rest of your system.
