IE7 and SP3

    I am sorry to be such a pest about this topic!
    This is a quote from MS release notes on SP3:
    ----------------------------------

    Internet Explorer

    If you have installed Windows Internet Explorer® 7 or a beta version of Internet Explorer 8, and then install Windows XP SP3, you cannot uninstall Internet Explorer.

    To avoid this, ensure Internet Explorer 7 or a beta version of Internet Explorer 8 is not installed before installing Windows XP SP3.

    If you have already encountered this issue, uninstall Windows XP SP3, uninstall Internet Explorer, and then reinstall Windows XP SP3.

    I have the 2006 version of IE7 installed with SP2. There is a more current version of IE7.
    Does the above statement of MS mean I will not be able to uninstall my IE7?
    This seems to be a catch-22 situation. If I uninstall IE7 how do I install SP3 without a version of IE7 on my machine to do Windows Update. Am I missing something here? If so, please excuse my ignorance.

    First, uninstall SP3. Then uninstall IE7. When you uninstall IE7 it will automatically roll back to IE6. You can use IE6 in lieu of IE7 for any needed updates. After you reinstall SP3, you can then update to IE7 if you so desire.

    I never installed SP3 because of this question. How do you know my computer will roll back to IE6? and what if it doesn't? I will be up the creek without a paddle!
    I might mention that there have been several changes to Windows update since IE7 came out and what I have currently on my computer may not work with IE6 if it rolls back.

    I installed IE7 on my computer and didn't like it. The uninstall worked with no problems and returned me to the IE6. However, I can't guarantee that it will go as well for you.

    IE6 is still widely used and is compatible with XP at any stage of patching as far as I know.

    IE7 was/is not part of SP2; it's a separate download/install.

    Therefor IE7 should be listed in your Add/Remove Programs, and you should be able to uninstall it.

    Of course YMMV, there are MS Knowledge Base articles when it doesn't work ;)

    Well... IE6 usage is around 35% opposed to IE7's 64% (of IE usage).

    Yes, IE6 is supported since it is part of XP SP2 and even SP3.

    Do you anticipate needing to unistall IE 7? I've never needed to do it.

    To tell you the truth I never liked IE7 compared to IE6 and I did not realize I could uninstall IE7 and be left with IE6. I am planning to do that and wonder if my bookmarks, favorites, etc., will remain after the uninstall. Do you know what folders and files contain the bookmarks, etc. so I can save them before the uninstall?

    Yes, they will remain. Although IE doesn't 'do' bookmarks... they're called 'favorites' in IE ;)

    They are located in the /Favorites folder below your User folder.
