This is one for Christer, or anyone else who can solve the mystery, please.
Quite on my own, without the benefit of Christer's sticky on moving default folders in XP, I embarked on that adventure.
After moving My Documents, I decided to move my Favorites to a data partition. All looked well and good after restarting IE7 and browsing to the new Favorites location.
The mystery comes up the first time I want to add a new Favorite. The drop down list in the add dialog box is in INVERSE ALPHABETIC ORDER!
I resort the Favorites in Explorer and it makes no difference.
In fact, nothing I do makes any difference. The Favorites listing itself behaves normally, but the Add to Favorites list is in reverse order!
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks,
    Ron

DrRon - Welcome to the Board :)

Your thread title suggests the sort order in the Favourites pane, but your post refers to the Add to Favourites dialogue .....

This is the dialogue which is in reverse order?

I don't see this as being anything to do with moving the Favourites folder - it is basic coding in IE 7 and there is no means for a User to change that.

My only suggestion is to uninstall IE 7 through Add/Remove programs to roll back to IE 6 and to load a fresh copy of IE 7 from here.

    PeteC...

    Thanks for your thoughts PeteC.

Can I ask, does it make sense to you that previous to moving my Favorites folder to a data partition, the Favorites pull down and the Add to Favorites pull down were both in proper order. But afterwards, the Add to Favorites changed to inverse?

I can imagine that reinstalling IE7 might resolve it, but not knowing why it changed makes me wonder about that as well.

My thoughts have centered on some kind of registry edit instead of the R&R route, perhaps similar to what Christer did a couple of years back. I'm a bit hestitant though...

Perhaps tonight I'll look into that.

It certainly does not make sense :) I guess it's coincidence and not related.
As I posted previously the alpha ordering is not configurable and would be coded into the software.

It would be interesting to see if an uninstall/reinstall with the Favourites folder remaining on the data drive resolves the problem. My Favourites folder is on a separate drive with none of the issues you are experiencing. I used the facility in TweakUI - My Computer > Special folders to facilitate the move.

I looked into TweakUI Special Folders and noted that while one could change the "location" of the folder, actually moving the files required the "right click" and "drag" procedure in Explorer.
Since I wanted to actually relocate the data files, I choose the latter approach.
In your case, does Explorer reveal your Favorites data (the shortcuts themselves) on the data partition?

I've been following the discussion but don't understand if it is the order of the menu items (as indicated by PeteC) that are reversed or if it is the favorites (the links). Assuming that this is about the links and also assuming that IE7 is not different from IE6 in this respect, have a look at Where does IE "store" the Favorites sort order?

If the identified "IE6 reg key" also exists in IE7, have a look at it and modify it as suggested. If you are not familiar with the registry, read up on How to back up and restore the registry in Windows and DO BACK UP!

I don't think there is any need to dabble in the Registry to change the Favourites sort order - simply right clicking on any link and selecting Sort by name gives you an alpha listing - unless you are suggesting that the registry entry determines if the sort is A-Z or Z-A.

Yes - and the folder has the American spelling - Favorites :)

    I may have confused everyone...

I have no problem with the Favorites sort order. I can display my 1680 Favorites files in 149 folders sorted by name.

The issue is: when I invoke the "Add to Favorites" dialog, the drop down menu displays those 149 folders in reverse alphabetic order.

If I add a Favorite to a selected folder, it goes there properly add going back to the Favorites pull down list, is displayed at the bottom of the list inside the folder I choose, and can be sorted by name with the right click dialog.

I simply cannot figure out wht I did to cause the Add to Favorites dialog pull down to display the Favorites folder list to be displayed in reverse order.

I have tried to reverse the order in Explorer but that has no effect on IE's display order.

Should I give up on my original thought of moving the 754KB of user data onto a data partition, and try moving the Favorites folder back to C under D&S again?

It's probably not a big thing, but my feeble old brain has some trouble saying the alphabet backwards to find the folder I want among the 149 I have...

    Hi DrRon

You need to remove the registry sort order, reboot, and let windows restore the default.

If you need help with regedit get back, otherwise do the below.

    Regedit to

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MenuOrder\Favorites

NOTE: the space in Menu Order is a bug in this BBS software, MenuOrder has no space.

In the right pane click on "Order" to highlight it, press the Delete key, and click Yes when prompted. Restart Windows.

    Hi Mike,

Well, I deleted the Explorer menu order key for the Favorites.
After restart, browsing to S:/My Documents/My Favorites reveals, as before, the folders are shown in alphabetic order.

Launching IE shows the Favorites in the same proper order in the Favorites Center. But the Add a Favorites pull down dialog box still has them in inverse alphabetic order...

This seems to say that Explorer order and IE order are not connected. We know that's true for the Favorites Center pull down. I think we are learning that the Add a Favorite pull down is also uniquely coded by IE and not related to the Windows menus.

Does that make sense to you? If so, where in the heck does the registry store the Add A Favorite pull down sort order???

    Some additional information:

Running IE7 without add-ons makes no difference.

Also, adding a folder to my Favorites behaves normally, shows up at bottom of Favorites listing until I again sort by name, then it goes into the alpha order. HOWEVER -

It (the new folder) shows up at the BOTTOM of the Add a Favorite listing (which is still in inverse alpha order) and will not move after I resort the favorites list by name!!!

So, it looks like the order of the two listings is not linked...???
