    YES

The only error I might have made was that I was not offered any provision in All Files to include this (*.*)

The saved file is a reg file though (it's icon looks similar to a green rubics cube)? And when double clicked, were you asked if you wanted to merge the information with the registry? And was it successfully merged?

    YES it did......

Just did a Google...How does this sound.

    Windows XP
From the Windows XP Start menu, select Control Panel (if you are using the default Start menu ) or Settings , then Control Panel (if you are using the Classic Start menu).

    Select User Accounts .

Select the account you want to change, and then select Reset Password.

Leave the password entry spaces blank. If prompted, enter your old password, but leave the new password field blank.

Click OK, then restart your computer

Double click the setautologon.reg file again and allow it to merge with the registry. Now, highlight and copy the following bolded command, all quotes included.

    reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon "> "%userprofile%\desktop\winlogon.txt "

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit Enter to open a command window.
Right click in the command window and Paste then hit Enter.
Ignore any errors and close the command window.
There should be a new text file on your desktop named winlogon.txt
Please attach that file to an email to me

Check my comments in #24 before I proceed with yours in #25

Roy, do NOT leave the password blank. As I previously stated, you first need to create a password, then restart and logon to verify the password works. That same password then needs to be added to the setautologon.reg file in place of the red X for the DefaultPassword entry.

    "DefaultPassword "= "X "

Received the text file and it appears correct. I also just tested again on my XP Home machine and this method worked flawlessly.

After setting a password on the account, does it indeed recognize and require the correct password to logon?

Lets check something else. Highlight and copy the following bolded text.

    reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa" | findstr "Packages" > "%userprofile%\desktop\lsa.txt "

Open a command window and paste it in then hit enter. Close the command window. Post the contents of the lsa.txt file on the desktop.

    Nothing wrong there either.

    Copy the contents of the code box below to a blank notepad and save it to your desktop as;

    Filename: noshowoptions.reg
Save as type: All Files (*.*)

    Code:
    REGEDIT4

    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
     "ShowLogonOptions "=dword:00000000

Double click and allow to merge with the registry. Assuming things are still as they were from running the setautologon.reg, restart the computer and see if there's any change.

I'm going to have to call it a night. I'll think on this a bit more and hopefully have something else to offer tomorrow evening.

    Noah,

Trust you have fully recovered after a restful and peaceful nights sleep.

Thanks very much for your consistent and patience assistance to my problem.

Your efforts have restored my PC to auto logon without me having to sign in.

Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou ever so much I am deeply grateful.

OK new day fresh challenges..but this time try to get to bed a little earlier.

    That's great news, Roy!! :D

Delete the noshowoptions.reg file on the desktop. You can also delete the text files we created on the desktop.

Save both of the reg files we created and placed in C:
Should you ever run into trouble logging on again, you can hold the Shift key while Windows is loading to skip the automatic logon process and instead be presented with the Welcome screen. You would need to do this to access the Administrator account in safe mode as well.
You could also run the undoautologon.reg file while in normal mode to undo the process if you know you'll be booting to safe mode>Administrator. Simply run the setautologon.reg to re-apply it.
Should you decide to change your account password in the future, do not overlook changing it in the setautologon.reg file, then running it to apply the change for autologon.

Thanks for that Noah I have copied your advice and installed such on C and also on thumbdrive as a backup, which I 'hope" won't be needed.

I can fix a car, wire the house, but have absolutely no comprehension of the intracancies of the PC. The closest I got to writing a program was in the isolation of communications when I was about your age and I had a Commodore64..primitive little beast that had me as its slave and servant.

Thanks for your help on this one..though it has introduced another issue which I will post under the appropriate forum....OE6 now freezes only when I click on Send/Receive...sooooooooo you might like to chase it up in that section...if you feel inclined

    Roy
