Logon Problem: Unable to logon because of an account restriction

XP home..settings changed that required logon password.

I reviewed similiar posts and did the Run ...userpasswords2 then unticked the appropriate box.

Now when I boot I get Unable to logon because of an account restriction.

I have tried to boot into Safe by F8 then delete but no go.

I am stuck with the Log on to Windows box and can't get pass there.

Hi Roy,

Did you try to logon to the Administrator account in safe mode? If that allows you to logon, do a system restore to a time in the near past when all was working properly.

Also try if needed ....... upon startup, begin tapping F8 to enable the Advanced Start Menu and select Last Known Good Configuration.

Do you have a Windows XP Operating System cd (not a Recovery disc)? If not, do you have access to a cd burner and a blank cd?

F8 takes me to the Boot Menu.......select a Boot First Device
Delete gets me into the CMOS Setup
I do have a Windows CD with SP1

 

Use F8, select the proper boot device (hard drive), then continue tapping F8 to see if it loads the Advanced Start Menu.

Is the computer updated to SP2? Can you burn a cd if needed?

What happened with Admin account in safe mode?

That got me into the options screen from which I tried a few.

I think it was the restore that helped me.

I've mussed up again 'cause when I used to boot up it would get me to the desktop without me having to do anything more than boot, but recently I have had to either sign in or click OK on the box.

I have been trying to get back to the straight boot through to desktop by means of the "control userpasswords2" option but seem to be messing it up.

AGAIN I am unable to get to desktop as I have this Log On to Windows box which is blank and a Logon message saying "The system could not log you on, Make sure your User name and domain are correct, then type your password again "

As I recall the last time I used the "control userpasswords2" option I left the popup blank so that's probably why I now have a blank Log On to Windows box blank.

I get this same popup box when I boot into safe mode so can't open up safe mode as this problem won't take me there just as it won't take me further to the desktop.

Seems like I am in a more difficult predicament than before.

Roy, please try from the Advanced boot menu, the 'Last Known Good Configuration' option. If that does not work, try the Administrator account in Safe Mode. If successful either way, do a system restore to a day before you started fiddling with control userpasswords2

Let me know, then we'll try tackling the Welcome screen problem.

 

Will not boot into Last known good configuration.

Safe Mode brings up the same Log On to Windows issue so can't get Safe mode to function.

I am therefore unable to do a System Restore or gain entry to any files.

No doubt a Windows repair option is available but I would see that as a last resort.

 

Roy, the reason for the message is that the password is not being accepted, and it halts because it has been instructed to automatically logon. What we need to do is to find a way to bypass the automatic logon process, or otherwise make the system snap out of it's attempt to. We also need to get to the Administrator account, which means trying this in safe mode since the Admin account is only available in safe mode on XP Home.

Boot the machine using F8 and select Safe Mode, then hold down the Shift key until it reaches the logon screen. If that doesn't work, while the message is displayed, try every possible key combination you can think of, such as Ctrl+Alt+Del, Ctrl+Alt+Shift, Ctrl+Alt+Esc, etc, as well as the Esc key by itself ...... to see if it will force the logon prompt, be it the Welcome screen or Classic logon screen.

 

OK we are in Safe mode now.

I will await your counsel.

 

Great! Do a System Restore to a time before you did anything with userpasswords and let me know if/when you are back in Windows in normal mode.

Seems "some" software nowadays is a bit hardier yet flexible than some years back to be able to withstand some of the aggressive attacks we subject it to.

I have gone back to WEDNESDAY 7TH. May.

This boots to a Log On to Windows...user name....masaloi with a click on OK without placing a password to bring up my desktop.

I still would like to bypass this Log On to Windows box that requires my attention and can just hang if I am away from the PC whilst it is loading.

Roy, you first need to open User Accounts in the Control Panel and put a password on your account. It can be anything, as long as it doesn't match your username. No need for it to be complex either. Once that has been done, restart the computer and make sure the logon password works correctly.

Next, highlight and copy the contents of the code box below to a blank notepad. Replace the red X between the quotes with your username (exactly as shown at the Welcome/logon screen) and password. Save it to the drive root (Local Disk C ) as;

Filename: setautologon.reg
Save as type: All Files (*.*)

Now, restart the computer. If you again fail logon, restart the computer in safe mode and hold down the Shift key after the initial post screen until the logon screen is displayed. Logon to the Administrator account, open C: and double click the undoautologon.reg file to merge it with the registry. Restart to normal mode and let me know so we can do some investigating.

Yes, REGEDIT4 is included. Highlight everything in the code box and copy it.

After pasting the text into notepad and editing the red Xs with username and password, close notepad. It will ask if you want to save the changes ..... select Yes. It will open a Save dialog, with fields to type the name and change the Save as type. Select My Computer in the left pane, then double click Local Disk C in the window. Once the filename and type have been entered, click Save.

Now open My Computer>Local Disk C, locate and double click the saved setautologon.reg file.

 

After implementing your instructions on Boot it comes up with a Blank Log On to Windows box.

When I enter username and password it proceeds to desktop.

Seems like we are back at the beginning! eh!

Please verify that you did edit the red Xs in the setautologon.reg file with your username and password. Navigate to the file, right click and select Edit to open it with notepad.
