Whenever I try to access Internet Options in the IE Explorer Tools tab it gives me this message: "This operation has been canceled due to resrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." I am the administrator but it's locking me out.

I recently installed IE 7.0 on my computer. Could this have anything to do with my problem?

I am also running Norton Internet Security 2008 and Windows Xp service pack 2.

Not sure how to use Regedit

I went into regedit mode and went to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft but found no "internet explorer" file. I also did a search and did not find "NoBrowserOptions" anywhere.

I am unsure how to edit my registry. How do I back it up and how do I edit it.

It would seem that the registry key does not exist in IE 7 - I cannot find it in my registry either, so that is not the source of the problem.

Can you access Internet Options via Control Panel?

    Are you running Spybot S & D ?

    Thanks for the response Pete.

There are no internet options in my control panel. I looked for that myself and was surprise to find that was the case.

And I am not running a spybot- only Norton Internet Security 2008.

I tried the Remove Restrictions Tool (RRT) 1.0 suggested by Broni, however the 1.0 version does not have options for restoring the "Internet Options" tab.

They have since come with a 2.0 version which is supposed to have options for restoring the "Internet Options" tab in IE7:

    http://www.softpedia.com/progScreenshots/RRT-Remove-Ristrictions-Tool-Screenshot-68926.html

The 2.0 version however has been replaced on the manufacterer website by a new 4.7 version. This version has the option to restore the "Internet Options" tab disabled in the Trial download version. In order to use these option, one has to pay $14.95 for the full version of the software.

Thanks anyway Broni for the suggestion.

I am always wary of software that offers a crippled trial with no guarantee of success.

    Try this ....

Start > Run > Inetcpl.cpl > Enter - does this bring up Internet options?

    If it does ....

Check that the Internet Options in Control Panel has not been disabled through gpedit ....

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_c.htm and scroll down to Control Panel Applets.

If no joy there I suggest an uninstal of IE 7 which rolls you back to IE 6 and download a fresh copy of IE 7 and install .....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

THis worked for this poster here ....

Running Inetcpl.cpl did not work- Internet options are still unavailable- from the control panel or IE7. Running gpedit.msc did not work as well- I got the message "Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file click the Start button and then click Search. "

I am getting ready to try uninstalling IE7.

Reinstalling IE7 may do it but do the below first, and if you already have reinstalled and it did not fix the issue then do it also.

    Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF)
    http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#...C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file.

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
    Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here 1 at a time do the below

    Reinstall BITS
    Reinstall Windows Firewall
    Repair Permissions

Watch for any File not found or other errors as this may lead to the fix!

    Reboot retest!

    Get back to us.

    Mike

My condolences on the Norton tho!

I'm back in business- Thanks for the Help!

I was able to restore "Internet Option" priviledges by uninstalling IE7 and reinstalling IE7.

Thanks to everyone for their help, Pete especially.
