After uninstalling IE7 and rebooting, windows never rolled back to IE6 and now after logging on I cannot access my desktop. How can I now reinstall internet explorer without the desktop?

I am running Windows XP Home edition

Inm - Welcome to the Board :)

If you can boot to Safe mode with at least a Start bar try a System Restore to a point before you uninstalled IE 7

Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete and you will get the Task Manager. You can use it to browse to the executable file for reinstalling IE7 and run it.

First though, while in the Task Manager, look at the processes running and verify that explorer.exe is listed. If not, click File > New Task > and type Explorer.exe in the field and click OK. Perhaps that will bring the Desktop into view. I don't suggest that it will fix your problem but it will give information that may help establish what is wrong.

Thanks for this advice. No luck. Explorer.exe is not listed there and when I tried to add it the message said it cannot be found. Also something about Normalize.dll is missing.

I was wondering if I could use the Windows installation disk that came with the computer to reinstall just explorer. What do you think?

Inm, I would run SFC /scannow if i were you. You can do that from Task manager. Be prepared to furnish your original install CD.

Explorer.exe is a protected system file so you may have some severe damage if it is missing.

Before doing the above, take a look in C:\windows\system32\dllcache\ and you should find a copy there. If not, then check C:\windows\ServicePackFiles\I386\ directory. All copies are the same. If found, double click it and see if you get a Desktop. If so, you can copy/paste it to the C:\windows\ directory and perhaps get back to where you can do further research and possibly run an error check on the drive.
