Can KB929123 be removed from XP SP3?

KB929123 is the security update to OE6 that enabled the copying of database files to the recycle bin during compaction.

While I understand the reasons behind this move by Microsoft, I really wish they had made it a user defined preference.

I have nearly 40 folders in my OE, many of which are over 1 GB compacted. When I compact my folders with KB929123 installed, it is a 30 minute process. I was used to compacting my folders, previous to the update, several times a day if needed (they get a workout sometimes), but after, OMG ... I couldn't stand it! I had to uninstall the update to keep my sanity.

With Windows XP SP3 out, it includes KB929123 as part of it.

I'm wondering if anyone, who has installed it, could see if KB929123 can be removed after the update? Does it even show it as an update?

I know how to back up my mail and I do it as often as I feel I need to. I don't need Microsoft to tell me when or how. That update is a pain in the backside for anyone with many large folders in OE6 and I'm going to have to quit using it altogether if I can't stop the "copy to the recycle bin" from happening.

Is there a registry entry somewhere that can disable this feature? I've searched and found none so far ... but maybe you fine people know more about it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

Stormlord - Welcome to the Board :)
I am not sure if there is a definitive answer to that or not.

You have removed KB929123 from your system and it will be replaced by SP3 on the basis that SP3 contains all the updates since SP1. I suspect that you will be able to remove it, but have no way of being definitive on this.

On my System running SP3 through the RC's and now RTM SP3 KB929123 can be uninstalled, but it was there prior to installing various flavours of SP3 - hence my uncertainty.

I suggest you download SP 3 CD from MS downloads and test. If you cannot uninstall the KB uninstall SP3 through Add/Remove Programs. I am not sure if Windows Update gives you the uninstall option or not - I have never installed a Service Pack via that route.

I fear you are playing with fire here. The folder size limit in OE is 2 Gb and OE starts to play funny long before that limit is reached. I think you are on thin ice as well :)

The compact function happens every 100th time you close OE. You can manually reset the counter if you want.

    Close O/Express/
Start/ Run/ type in "regedit "( no italics)
navigate to key( double click each one)
" H Key- Current- User" / Identities / there is a long number double click on that / Software / Microsoft / Outlook Express /
5.0. In righthand pane / double click " Compact Check Count "
then change the number to "0 ".

To Pete: Thanks for info ... I know I could try it by installing the entire SP3 and remove it later through Add/Remove. I even downloaded it (300MB+) earlier for just that type of experiment. I just thought maybe someone would be able to tell me how to uninstall or roll back that particular part of the update in the event that it wasn't separated from it. I'm not certain what KB929123 has in it, exactly, so I'm not sure how to manually undo it (or IF that can be done).
Also, I've been using OE in this respect for years, through version 4, and 5 as well and have never had a problem. Well, once, after moving all my files to a new hard drive, and updating to a new version of OE at the same time (I forget the version, but they had changed the database structure), I couldn't access the folders, but with a rollback to a previous version, I was able to import the folders from a store location, and then update with the folders in place and it did OK.
Anyway, the point is, it has always been stable for me. Some of my 40ish folders are newsgroup folders that are absolutley huge. When they approach the 2GB limit, I remove the dl'd message bodies, and compact the folder manually, then I start "growing" it again. With the update to KB929123, every time I do that it copies the nearly 2GB file to the recycle bin first, before even beginning the compaction process. Drives me crazy ... if I lose the folder, which hasn't yet happened, I'll just reset the thing and re-download all the headers. Some of these groups have grown to over 700 thousand headers, so I don't like to do that often if I don't have to.

To Steven: Thanks, but if all I had to worry about was a compaction every hundreth time OE was opened, I wouldn't have a problem with KB929123 at all. Good to know where that's located in the registry though .. I never throw away a registry tip. :)

I guess I'll just have to give the update a try and see what happens. Maybe it would be best if I update the KB929123 first, then use WU to update the remaining files (rather than the entire SP3 download). Afterwards, I may be able to uninstall the Hotfix because it "should" still be in my update list in the Add/Remove Programs.
    Worth a shot....

    Thanks all!
