Hi all, just to let you guys know ahead, I've done my searching on this problem (I tried most of the suggestions given (including downloading the windows update patch: WindowsXP-KB894391-x86-ENU) which didn't work) so I thought I'd try asking in a new thread specfic to my problem :(

The Problem...

Whenever I start up my computer a window that says:

"Generic Host Process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience. "

and when I close it, either:

1) My Internet Browser, and/or Folder Browser Window changes from a Windows XP Style to a "Windows 98 Style "

or

2) I lose sound...

I check the data error report and this is what came up:

szAppName : svchost.exe szAppVer : 5.1.2600.2180 szModName : ntdll.dll
szModVer : 5.1.2600.2180 offset : 00011f52

and the Error Report Contents:

C:\DOCUME~1\JERVIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER28de.dir00\svchost.exe.mdmp
C:\DOCUME~1\JERVIN~1\LOCALS~1\Temp\WER28de.dir00\appcompat.txt

anyways here's my HijackThis report:

Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1

Hi Jervin
Welcome to Windowsbbs. :)

First let me say this is one of the worst problems to try and figure out, it is such a "generic" message that it may or may not be a malware problem.

But, lets see what we will find.

Please do these in the order given.

Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

• Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
Under Main choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
If you use Firefox browser
• Click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
If you use Opera browser
• Click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
Click the Empty Selected button.
NOTE: If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.
Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.
For Technical Support, double-click the e-mail address located at the bottom of each menu.

Now this.

Download ComboFix from Here to your Desktop.

It's best to disable realtime protection applications as they sometimes interfere with the tool.
Check this link for any applicable programs you may have.
• Close all open programs and windows
• Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.
• Vista users right click Combofix.exe and select Run As Administrator.
• When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log and a HiJackthis log in your next reply
Note: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while its running. That may cause it to stall

Note - ComboFix may reset a number of Internet Explorer's settings, including making it the default browser.

Note - Combofix makes some changes when run to prevent autorun/autoplay of ALL CDs, floppies and USB devices, to assist with malware removal & increase security. If this is an issue or makes it difficult for you to use those devices, please ask how to reset it.

Please post the ComboFix log.

Thanks
Geri

Hi Jervin
I will go through your log a little bit later. I did not see what I hoped to see.

Did Combofix reboot your computer?

If so did you still get the message?

Please keep me informed when you ever don't ever get the message when your computer restarts.

Thanks
Geri

Hi
Ok, I'm not seeing anything obvious in the CF log.

lets get a uninstall list and a start up list.

Here is how.

To get an Uninstall List from HijackThis:
• Open HijackThis, click Config, click Misc Tools
• Click "Open Uninstall Manager "
• Click "Save List" (generates uninstall_list.txt)
• Click Save, copy and paste the results in your next post.

Create a Startup List

• Open HiJackThis
• Click on the "Config..." button on the bottom right
• Click on the tab "Misc Tools "
• Check off the 2 boxes next to the Box that says "Generate StartupList log "
• Click on the button "Generate StartupList log "
• Copy and past the StartupList from the notepad into your next post

Please look through the uninstall list and let me know if any of the programs may have be installed at about the time you started getting the message.

Please post the 2 logs.

Thanks
Geri

oops sorry, forgot about to tell you about that part:

I'm not completely sure about which program I have installed right before the problem started, but the most recent one in the uninstall list are the:

Avid Core Runtime
Avid DIO Runtime

oh and now whenever I boot up the computer I lose the sound AND the layout of everything changes to classic style (kind of like windows 98)

Hi Jervin

I would suggest uninstalling Avid components and see if the problem persists. Especially a culprit since Audio is being affected. Might also check for audio driver updates.

Let me know.

Thanks

So I uninstalled the Avid programs, but I can only seem to uninstall the Avid Core Runtime, but not the DIO Runtime (when I try it gives me this message):

>SetupDLL\SetupDLL.ccp (391)
pAPP: AvidDIORuntime
PVENDOR: Avid Technology
PGUID: 108749BE-6264-4C49-A9A1-C452A2B57B45
$11.50.0.42618
@Windows XP Service Pack 2 (2600) IE 6.0.2900.2180

also forgive cuz I'm somewhat of a begginer when it comes to computers, but when you say check for audio driver updates, do you mean buying a new one or do I download it off a website?

EDIT: Also I don't know if this helps, but when I searched my computer for svchost, I ended up with 5 results:

1) SVCHOST found in C:\I386
2) svchost found in C:\ComboFix
3) svchost.vista found in C:\ComboFix
4) svchost found in C:\WINDOWS\system32
5) SVCHOST.EXE-2D5FBD18.pf found in C:\WINDOWS\Prefetch

Hi Jervin
Look for an uninstaller in the DIO folder {Start" > All Programs)
(I would hope it has a Program Files folder with an uninstaller).

If that don't work try to reinstall then uninstall.

All those svchost are OK.

That would be a download off their web site.
Need to check for drivers on the Acer site, probably. I'm assuming it's a laptop.
Check for your make and model #

Let me know how this goes.

Thanks

The DIO doesn't seem to have a program folder for me to go to and uninstall/reinstall, anyways I'm starting to think that I should just reformat my computer, thought I'd ask you first

Hi Jervin
That option is up to you.

Like I said in the beginning, these are the worst problems to try and figure out because it could be so many different things.
If it was a malware problem then most the time it's kind of obvious from bad files found.
So because it does not seem to be malware then we are more or less guessing at what may be causing it. and we still may not find it.

noahdfear is good at this, but I have seen him spend weeks on trying to find the cause.

Let me know what you decide to do.
