Can a pc have too much Security? I used to have AVG 7.01, yet they said we had to upgrade to AVG Free 8.0. This 8.0 seems to have more protection and seems to slow down my pc.

I have WindowsXP Firewall turned on. I also have Windows Defender and Spybot. Along with that, mymontana.com has Spam Trapper for email.

Just wondering as since i dl AVG 8.0, i noted the pc seems sluggish.

You have to have firewall, and antivirus.
AVG 8.0 is getting very mixed reviews. You can still use AVG ver. 7.5.
Or, you can switch to Avast. I just installed it on my Vista, and it works well.

I don't think you will be able to get updates to 7.xx any longer, you'll have to upgrade to v8 or get something different, I suggest trying these, which currently don't have any extra toolbars, unlike the new AVG.

Any update on that? This is the first I have heard of AVG Free going away....

What is the best way to install those other AV? Do I need to disconnect after I download it?

    never mind I found this:

I was well aware of AVG8 Free, I do not recommend it due to the issues I mentioned above. On top of that, there are a lot of problems with AVG thru out several forums. This one included

Also, you will actually be able to get def downloads for 7.5 until the end of the year.

    See here

    Best way to remove av:
    • Download new file to install.
    • Disconnect from Net, either physically, via connection, or if your firewall supports a 'lock down' mode, use that.
    • Uninstall old av.
    • Reboot system, but be sure you have Net access off
    • Install new av, unlock Net, update defs

Thanks! I will check out Avast. I have a hard time paying for stuff if I can get a better product for free. :D
    But NOD32 looks good......

It appears Avira AntiVir provides some additional protection over Avast (both free version offers) ... does this extra protection influence performance / system lag??

    UPDATE
Re-reading each product line, it would appear Avast provides equal or more protection. Guess it's time to uninstall AVG Free. It's was a pleasant ride and I do appreciate all they have provided.

Adios AVG. Good knowing you. So far Avast is pretty good.
I'll do a scan and see if it finds anything.

    Thanks for the help.

Just installed AVG 8.0 this week and I do not like it. The link scanner is nice, but my system drags with. I disabled the scanner, but things are still too slow.

To agree with what Dennis said above - AVG has been good to me over the last 5 years, but I guess it's time to move on. :(

I am going to try Avast and see how it goes.
