Was using win 98 and my sound card worked fine.

Changed over to Win XP and when playing music/mp3's from hard drive, audio cd's in cd player the sound jumps / skipps forward about 2 secs every 10 to 20secs.

Has anyone else had a simular prob with their sound card having moved over to Win XP, if so, how did you cure it, if at all.

Would appresiate any help / advise.

    Cheers ........... Radiation

Have you downloaded the lastest XP drivers from Creative for this card?
Try completely uninstalling the software, remove the card from the device manager and let windows detect it again.
Check for any IRQ conflicts in the device manager and it may be worth trying the card in a different PCI slot.
This is assuming you have adequate processor speed and RAM for XP and this card?

    Hi bud,

    Thanks for your reply.

    I have

GA-7ZXE VIA KT133A AGPSet Mother Board

500meg memory, processor running at 1800

The motherboard has a built in sound card, AC97 that was working fine with win 98, when i changed over to win xp about a week ago the sounds all went garbled, so i went out and bought the Sound Blaster 4.1 digital.

As I have said the new sound card is crisp and clear, all the garbled noises have gone, just left with this skipping/jumping.
I have dissabled the built in sound card. and removed the softare for it.

    Drive C: = 60 gig drive
    Drive D: = 80 gig drive

Have network cards in slot 1 & 2, sound card was in slot 3 but moved it to slot 5 last night.

Installed latest xp sound card drivers last night, but did not uninstall the old ones first.

Also installed any updated xp drivers from windows web site

I'll try unistalling the software and take the card out and start again.

Let you know what happens latter today.

I even tried using the sound card in windows safe mode, but i was unable to, the strange thing was (in safe mode) even though no progs were open/running, something was making my hard drive light flash once every second, this happen in normal mode as well. I am wondering is a prog is accessing my hard dive and causing my sound card to skip/jump. My understanding is that in safe mode with no progs open, their shoud be no disk activity.

If this is a possible cause, I don't know how i could trace the ofending prog.

I have tried in normal mode closing all other progs, anti virus etc etc.

    Cheers bud .... Radiation.

    Hi Radiation!

The AC'97 onboard sound should have no problems with XP. I've set up a couple of PC's with onboard sound and XP. Have you tried the latest onboard sound driver from Gigabye's WEB site for this M/B? I have used the even later drivers from the Via WEB site with no problems.
Anyway the Creative soundcard should be the better choice of the two. You say you disabled the onboard sound. You did this in BIOS before installing the Creative PCI card and uninstalled any reference in the device manager. Some M/B's require a changing of a jumper on the board to disable the sound as well as switching it off in BIOS?

The Disk activity every second is normal. The HDD LED should only flash at low intensity and there should be no drive platter (access) sound when this (polling?) occurs.

It's the usual round of elimination!

    Cheers,

    Paul

OK, I have removed the sound card software (sound blaster 4.1 digital) uninstalled the sound card, removed the sound card, put the sound card back in, installed the sound card drivers/software, but still have the same problem skipping/jumping.

I have read through the mother board user manual 4 times, but i can not find any mention of changing of a jumper on the board to disable the sound.

This problem has stummped quite a few people so far.

Yours faithfully in tears ... Radiation ;-)

Does this make any sence to anyone.

I have taken out my soundblaster card, uninstalled the drivers/software.

I have activated my built in sound card AC97, installed the all the drivers etc.

I was back to normal, the sound was distorted / garbled.

I downloaded the latest drivers off the webb and installed them and the sound card sounded

worse than before, if that was possible.

I then re-installed the sound card drivers off my cd that came with the mother board
    and the sound was perfect.

I nearly bust into tears with happiness ;-)

Sometime latter when i rebooted the computer, the sound was all garbled again,
so i tried to re-install the drivers from the cd again, but it would not let me,
it said a better driver could not be found.

Does this make any sence to you at all, because i'm now brain dead.

    Cheers, ... Radiation

I seem to have found my problem.

I have 2 network cards, 1 for the cable internet and 1 for the 2nd network computer.

I took both network cards out and my soundblaster card worked fine.

It would seem that the sound blaster card does not like the 2 network cards.

My answer would seem to a router.

I hope this helps anyone else with the same problems that i have been having.

    Cheers ......... Radiation.
