hi everyone. This is my first post and I hope you are able to help me with a my frustrating problem. I have done a search on this topic, but my issue seems quite specific. :(

A few months ago my PC frequently blue screened every few minutes or so with "IRQL not less than or equal to" error. I reinsalled Windows XP and a local it company changed the power supply (to a Thermaltake 430W) and I no longer get the blue screens. However, I have been having quite a few different problems recently. My PC just freezes (i can see no mouse etc) but PC fans still run. I then have to reboot and then it runs for between a few minutes and a few hours then freezes again.

I notice that the system freezes when I am playing music using winamp - sometimes after 20 mins, sometimes after 1 minute.

I have stopped running wireless (DLink DWL-G132) as I thought it was compounding the problem (cutting in and out and sometimes freezing like still it does now). So, I am now running through cable direct to my wireless router (Netgear FWG 114P). However, I note that the wireless works fine with my other computer (Laptop).

I am unable to run AVG anti virus (free edition) as my computer almost always freezes about 10 minutes into the full scan. However, on a couple of occasions in the last week, it has actually run a few full scans (at night, when scheduled) and it finds no viruses.

Also, I am also unable to undertake synchronisation between my PC and iPod (using winamp) because my PC freezing about half way through.

Regarding temperature, ASUS probe states that my Motherboard is running at 31C and CPU is running at 36C. Which I think is quite cool.

I have run memtest (around 20 times on each) and it says that my RAM is OK.

I have run chkdsk and the disk is OK

I have cleaned all dust out of my PC case

There are no warnings in my device manager

Finally, I had another system crash last night. I ran the minidump through windows debugger and it states that the problem was "probably caused by avgrsxp.sys (avg7rsxp+1841) ". It also states that there was another "IRQL not less or equal to" . I dont know what this means. Are you able to help?

Here is a summary my system details - are you able to please help?

An update. Today I closely monitored my CPU useage (using Task Manager) and temperature levels (using ASUS probe) when I was synchronising my iPod. I noticed that there was an increase in CPU use to between 20% and 50%, and a temperature increase from around 36C to about 45C, just before my system freezes. Is this normal?

    bug66 - Welcome to the Board :)

From the info you give, especially relating to AVG and the extract from the dump data the most likely culprit is AVG - avgrsxp.sys. I suggest you uninstal it and reinstall and test.
Not unexpected - the CPU is working a little harder :)

    Hi Bug

I agree with Pete on the AVG. Based on the mini dump and the fact that AVG does not work as expected.

AVG is good but may have been damaged, perhaps even by malware that tried to disable it.

    I advise.

    1. Download latest AVG to HD it will contain latest defs.

    2. Download CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
get slim at bottom install it do not run yet.

    3. ATF-Cleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

    4. Download XClean_Micro http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe

    NOW:

    5. Uninstall AVG then reboot.

    6. While it is rebooting before it gets back up, unplug Network cable or turn off router or cable modem (in case you do have culprits).

    7. Run CCleaner temp and registry multiple times until nothing else found

    8. Run ATF-Cleaner clean all except passwords

    9. Run Xclean delete all it finds decline to reboot on each entry but continue the scan

    10. Boot to safe mode run both CCleaner and ATF-Cleaner again.

    11. Reboot to normal, reinstall AVG and scan with it current virus defs. When complete reconnect network and update AVG online.

If you want to be sure AVG runs and sure also if you have a culprit then run again with the updates

Get back to us. Especially if AVG or Xclean found anything.

    Mike

Thank you, have done all this. I uninstalled AVG and downloaded the latest AVG, run CCleaner, ATF Cleaner and Xclean in safe and normal mode, then reinstalled AVG.

    Findings:

    * AVG found no viruses, 4 spyware and a small handful of tracking cookies. PC is now clean
    * Xclean found absolutely nothing

The (somewhat) good news is that AVG scanned my PC without freezing on 2 out of 5 occasions and I still dont get BDSODs.

I have tried to sychronise my iPod (another cause of freezing), and my PC still consistently freezes.

Unfortunately, there are no minidumps as a result of the freezing. Also, I cannot Ctrl-Al-Del, the fans remain on, the but my hard drive LED does not flash.

    Your advice please? THank you.

    Hi Bug

As usual Pete is right on the money!

But confirm AVG did sill freeze 3 out of 5 times?

I don't use IPOD either but my daughter does and I have helped her with hers and other people also.

Before continuing with everything else drag your mouse with left button down accross the text between the lines but not the lines. Once it is highlighted rt click and copy.
    ------------------------------------------
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\tasklist.exe /svc > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\Tasklist.txt
    %SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system32\sc query type= service > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\ScQuery.txt
    ------------------------------------------
    then

    Click Start-Run
    type

    cmd
    enter or ok

rt click the cmd screen and click paste then hit enter twice then close CMD screen.

Two new icons will appear on your desktop, open copy and paste the contents of these back to us.

Ok after the above is complete continue with below.

Do as Pete directed and un-install the IPOD, Itunes Quicktime items.

But after uninstalling before reinstalling reboot and do the cleanups once again.

Additionally lets use some Malware tools to see if we can detect anything running on your computer that could cause this issue. Not saying you have anything but these will show all things running.

    Read understand this thread: http://windowsbbs.com/announcement.php?f=41

Then post the HijackThis (HJT) log and "all 3 logs" from Deckard (DSS).

    Mike

Hi Mike, thank you very much.

To confirm, AVG freezes around 3 out of 5 times.

Also, my PC is also now starting to freeze more often 50% of the time after rebooting (at the welcome screen or just after Windows logo).

Regarding iTunes - I will do as you ask and post update shortly

Have also run the two commands. The Tasklist notepad was empty - not sure if this is a problem? THe Scquery Notepad came back with these results:

Mike - just to add to the above, maybe the Tasklist Notepad file was empty was because the command prompt text says:

    Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
    (C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.

    C:\Documents and Settings\User>%SystemRoot%\system32\cmd.exe /c %windir%\system3
    2\tasklist.exe /svc > "%USERPROFILE% "\Desktop\Tasklist.txt
'C:\WINDOWS\system32\tasklist.exe' is not recognized as an internal or external
    command,
    operable program or batch file.

    C:\Documents and Settings\User>

Yes you have XP home and the Tasklist program is only installed on Pro.

But you can and should get it.

    See this http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=72958

    Do only post #6

    Then try again.

The do the Tasklist again and send it.

But the fact that it is freezing on boot points elsewhere like a Power Supply or Hot CPU.

I will be preparing a seperate post on these.

In rereading your 1st post I do believe you are running hot.

If you have the sensors then the below will show you the temp. You need to know the idling or lite use temp and then watch it when you do the things that cause freezes.

    Hope you have the sensors

You may want to open the case and blow it out with canned air, it may be clogged check the cpu fan closely.

    Better check!
