Problem with msiexec.exe: using lots of CPU capacity + memory

About once every few hours my floppy drive starts making regular noises (about once every 2 seconds) and at the same time my mouse pointer momentarily changes to the eggtimer. This goes on for about 20 minutes, then stops.
Task Manager shows that msiexec.exe is running and using quite a high proportion of CPU capacity, as well as lots of memory.
If I click on "End Process" that entry disappears, but reappears almost immediately somewhere else in the Task Manager display.
I understand that this program is concerned with installing new software, but I am not doing that.
Why is this happening, and is there anything I can do to stop it?

Most likely this is caused by a corrupted or unfinished program installation. If you cannot uninstall/reinstall the program responsible, then Microsoft's Windows Installer Cleanup Utility may be a solution.

Tricky part is which program - any idea what you installed last?

This started months ago, and I have only just got around to moaning about it. I have installed and uninstalled dozens of programmes since it began, so I doubt very much whether I could identify any software which didn't install properly, which could have started it off.
I'll have a look at the cleaner utility and let you know what happens.

I loaded and ran the cleaner utility, and it lists 72 files which apparently used windows installer to install, but I still haven't a clue which one may be causing the trouble. If I delete installer information about all of them it seems I should have to reinstall them all, which as far as I am concerned, is a step too far! Is there anything else I could try?

    NO!

    Absoloutly not!

If you remove them all you will really have a mess1

The Installer "Cleanup" is exactly what it says.

    It does list all programs.

The only time it should be used is when you have issuses with a program you used Add/Remove programs to un-install and it could not or not completely.

Or if you used the programs un-install.

Look carefully thru this list for programs you had but un-installed or thought you un-installed.

DO NOT USE UNINSTALLER CLEANUP on any programs you actually have and use.

I am now preparing a procedure for you to run for your issue, so while I am doing that look closely at what Installer cleanup found and use it only on programs you have had but already removed that should not be in this list.

    Hi Jon

    Lets do some general cleanup

    1. Download CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds
get slim at bottom install it do not run yet.

    2. ATF-Cleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html

    3. Download XClean_Micro http://www.xblock.com/download/xclean_micro.exe

    NOW:

    4. Run CCleaner temp and registry multiple times until nothing else found

    5. Run ATF-Cleaner clean all except passwords

    6. Run Xclean delete all it finds decline to reboot on each entry but continue the scan

Get back to us. Especially if Xclean found anything.

    Next

    Reboot

    Then go here get Dial-a-fix

    http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4899.html

When run clear any restrictions if any

    then

Check all boxes on this page and GO

    Report results back!

    Hi Mike
One slight problem; I've downloaded the first two files you mentioned, but Zone Alarm says the XClean_Micro site has spyware, and will not let me access it. I can override Zone Alarm, but is there a good reason for the way it reacts?

Yes XClean is a malware scanner and Zone alarm should be set to allow it.

I Included it in case you have other issues.

    Let it run.

OK, done numbers 1-6. Xclean found "WhenU-UControl ", and I removed it. Shall I carry on with Dial-a-fix?

Jon did you look for programs you had uninstalled or are not now installed in the Add/Remove list, that are listed in Installer cleanup?

If a program is listed in the Installer cleanup list and you do not have this program in the Add/remove list or in Program Files. Then they should be removed in the Installer Cleanup.

    Look closely.

I have run Dial-a-fix. There were no restrictions. I have attached the log.

    Notes about this log:
    1) "->" denotes an external command being executed, and "-> (number)" indicates
the return code from the previous command
    2) Not all external command return codes are accurate, or useful
    3) Sometimes commands return 0 (no error) even when they fail or crash
    4) If an error occurs while registering an object, please send an email to:
dial-a-fix@DjLizard.net and include a copy of this log

    Ok that is good.

There was no need to post the log except in case of errors.

Now about my last post about closely check Installer cleanup?

And what about the issue is msiexec still causing problems?

The msiexec problem has always been rather sporadic; I haven't had it today, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
As for checking Installer cleanup, I think that's a job for a wet afternoon.!
    Thanks for your help

    Alright let me know!

Simply bring up Add/remove in one screen, the Installer cleanup in the other.

Then browse to Program Files and do the same.

Look for programs in the Installer Cleanup that you do not have and delete.

That is the next step if it happens again.
