    Hi,

I am using window XP in my Dell laptop. It came with Sony DVD rom and Sony My DVD software. Few days ago, I uninstalled the the Sony My DVD software. Then, I found that the DVD rom was not being detected. I could not see DVD rom in Window explorer. So, I restore the XP to previous restore point and restart it. After, that I could not boot it. When I turn on the computer, I see few options:
    .....................
    ......................
    Boot in safe mode,
    ..........
    .........
    Boot normally

Whatever option I choose, it fails to boot and goes to a green screen saying following massage:
    ===========================
A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:
check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drive ...........
    ......................................................
    .......................................................
    STOP: OxOOOOOO7B (OxF78A6524, OxCOOOOO34, OxOOOOOOOO, OxOOOOOOOO)
    ==============================

Because I can't boot it, there is no question of checking viruses, etc. Also, I could not boot up using installation disk because DVD rom is not detecting the CD.

I am stuck. I do not know what to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks

    Hi Manojg and welcome,

It sounds like you may have more than one problem.

Uninstalling the DVD software in Windows would not ordinarily stop the drive from being detected at boot up by the XP install CD. Have you checked your BIOS setup to see if the DVD drive is listed first in the boot sequence?

I suspect that your DVD drive may be defective since you would not ordinarily have uninstalled the software if you weren't having some sort of problem with it.

Even so, the foregoing wouldn't normally prevent the system from booting so that's why I think there is more than one problem.

Is this DVD drive easily removable? If so, remove it and see if that affects the problem in any way. It may be a case of Windows not accepting the DVD drive and causing the error to be thrown for faulty hardware. Perhaps pulling the drive and possibly being able to boot will allow you to reinstall the DVD drivers and then plug it back in for acceptance. Just a thought...worth trying.

Without an optical drive, you're up the creek with few easy possibilities for a fix. I'm assuming your file system is NTFS. A FAT32 system would present some better possibilities provided that you had a floppy drive.

The problem may be due to a defective dvd drive or missing software for the drive. The dvd drive may be software dependant, sort of a "half virtual-half hardware" drive. And the boot order may be set to:
    1. cd-dvd
    2 hard disk 0,
and the booy may fail because the bios hangs at inability to detect the dvd drive.

Try to access the bios and set the hd as first boot device and see what happens.

    Hi,

Sorry for late reply and forgot to mension that it is a dual boot (window + linux) laptop. In Linux, the DVD drive is working fine. Before, the boot sequence was hd, floppy, dvd etc, and I tried to boot it up from hd without any success. I got the error massages as I have explained before. Yesterday, I changed the boot sequesnce to dvd, hd, floppy etc. and tried to boot from dvd (using window reinstallation disc). It detected the dvd but nothing happend, only blank screen even I waited for a long time.

It is a little difficult to remove the dvd rom because it inside the laptop, and one need to open it. I will try other suggestions before removing the dvd rom.

Thanks and waiting for your suggestions.

Try booting to Linux and running the HD error checking tool.

It sounds like the DVD drive is OK since it's working in Linux.

Do you have a Dell utilities CD that has the diagnostic software on it? They usually come with a Dell.

    Re missing DVD

I recently did the same thing ( removing Sony DVD software ) and my dvd player and writer diisapeared. They appeared in the device manager but with a cross against them and when a properties enquiry was executed, it stated that the drivers had not been installed or the registry was corrupt.

Then it occured to me that the software I had removed and Nero (which was also on my pc) used some of the same files so I un-installed Nero, re-installed it and like magic the two devices reappeared and work properly.

    I hope this helps.
