desktop frozen with strange descriptive bar

my desktop suddenly froze the icons despite all attempts to play with the taskbar. In addition it also developed a 2 inch bar on the left side with info such as 'folder tasks' and 'other places' embedded within this bar.
I cant get rid of this 'bar' nor move the icons around even though they are not 'locked'. I can send a screen shot if needed. Please e-mail to the following address. (yes I ran all virus/trojan checkers!)

To get rid of the bar, Click Here to open a Kelly's Korner page.

On that page, scroll down to line 15 and in the left-hand column, click on "Remove Common Tasks from the Desktop" to download a small .reg file.

After you have the file saved to the hard drive run it according to the instructions at the top of the Kelly's Korner page.

If your antivirus objects to running the file, ignore it. Kelly's files are safe.
