Is it only the Mass Storage Device that has the problem? Is it a memory stick or an external HDD drive?

You may have "cleaned" something important. Some memory sticks have a program that runs when you connect it, the one I know is called U3 and manages files on the drive. Does it appear as a drive in Start -> Computer? You can right-click on the drive and select Explore. Can you see any files or folders on the drive?
