Netscape 7 (the non-preview version) has been released. It is based on Mozilla 1.01.

The following information is off the Mozzilaine website at:
    http://www.mozillazine.org/

Netscape Communications Corporation today launched the final version of Netscape 7.0. This latest release is based on Mozilla 1.0.1, making it the first Netscape browser to be built upon post-1.0 code. The new version boasts several enhancements over the 0.9.4-based Netscape 6.2, including tabbed browsing, the ability to save complete web pages, print preview, site icons (Favicons), a download manager, full screen mode (Windows only), Quick Search within Mail & Newsgroups and Address Book, return receipts, mail labels, S/MIME mail encryption, CSS support in Composer and one-click web page publishing.

Netscape 7.0 also has several features not found in Mozilla. These include the ability to access Netscape Webmail and AOL accounts directly from within Mail & Newsgroups, a button to easily toggle the display of My Sidebar in Navigator and P3P support for automated cookie handling. Improved instant messaging features "” including file transfers, Buddy Alerts and Buddy Icons "” are provided by AOL Instant Messenger for Netscape and ICQ for Netscape. There's also a round throbber with a cool animation.

    The release notes are at:
    http://wp.netscape.com/eng/mozilla/ns7/relnotes/7.html

    It can be downloaded at:
    http://channels.netscape.com/ns/browsers/download.jsp
or from the ftp site at:
    ftp://ftp.netscape.com/pub/netscape7/english/7.0/windows/win32/sea/

Am 90% done downloading it off the ftp site.

    -John

Much better and smooth than Netscape 7.0 PR1. According to my few hours testing. (no, not yet crashed). And much faster than Netscape 6.2.1.

However, noticed one small problem: e-mail notification would not work if you don't have the Netscape Mail window opened (OR minimised).

    John and Antony,

7.0 Final is definitely a vast improvement over 6.2.3. It's fast, and runs more smoothly than Mozilla 1.1. I also think it is a bit faster than Mozilla 1.1? Maybe my imagination.

Quite true, the Mail Notification feature only works if the Mail window is open. I do hope this gets changed!

It will be interesting to get the feedback from others. I'm very interested in the users who have multiple mail accounts. I hope that feature is improved.

Thanks, John for alerting us that it was official, and available on the Netscape ftp site.

Using the "Custom" install, excluding all media players, whittled the install down to 12,148 KB. The 32 MB DL was a killer! I downloaded from SillyDog yesterday, and it took a while with my DUN connection.

Self, I say, when are you going to get broadband?

Ramona, you don't know what you are missing without broadband! Or maybe you do

Here we go again on the Netscape merry-go-round. I must be a sucker for punishment....downloading the full monty from the FTP site (approx 10mins download time...Broadband yeah-ha). Will let you know about the multiple mail accounts feature, and bugs too :D

    Hey Dr.jb!

    Ten minutes? :p

That makes me want to say very naughty words, as my download took almost 3 hours..... Can't believe I did it either. ;)

    Looking forward to your updates.

YESSSSS!!! What an improvement! At long last my site looks the way it was created in FrontPage (except the custom scrollbars..can't have it all I suppose). It even saves pages, complete with images in a folder (like IE does).

Next I'll be testing the mail program, but for now I like it. Perhaps NS has finally got it right??

I am using multiple e-mail and newsgroup accounts. I was quite impressed in NS7.0 PR1, will give you a report later after I have more tests.

    Netscape Mail

Mail works well for me. I have three e-mail accounts. The primary e-mail is a DSL ISP e-mail account. I also have a Netscape web mail account and a University e-mail account. My ISP and University accounts are set up with multiple folders and filters. In addition, I have a huge address book. The mail client in version 7 works fine for me on all three e-mail accounts.

I believe that many of the bugs associated with the e-mail in version 6.xx have been solved in version 7. With Netscape 6.23, I was constantly having address book and e-mail filtering problems. This forced me to use Netscape Communicator for e-mail and Netscape 6.2x for surfing the web. I have not been experiencing these difficulties in version 7.

    Installing NS 7 Final

Do you need to uninstall the 7.0 preview release before installing the final?

    Thanks

Very nice Ramona  Love the b/w pic....nope, not changed much. Glad to see that in this politically correct age one can still appear in a photo with a cigarette without the anti-smoking brigrade kicking up a storm :p

Right, back to the serious stuff..........

    Antony's NS7 Mail report

    Hello Guys.
(I know you all forget me. I was working on other more important Netscape 7 related work, sorry for posting back a bit late.)

This is my report from my few day's experimence with it.
    Netscape 7 Mail
    • Mail notification sound? imporved, sounds better, but still require Mail window opened to check for new mails.
    • Integration with Netscape WebMail? Improved as well, much more smooth when using, however it is still possible to hang your Netscape.
    • Not recommend using it.
    • Return Receipt. yes, we missed that in NS6.
    • Encryption of Messages. yes, we missed that in NS6.
    • Encryption of messages ISSUE: It won't ask you for password before you send encrypted message. ? This might be a new feature ?
    • Signed messages? yes, and it will ask your passwords first.
    • easier to create a new filter from the opened message.
    • displaying of all headers is now working (and improved from NS7PR1). (this feature was missing in NS6.xx.)
    • Message labelling: a good and handy feature (as from NS7PR1)
    • Message Import? (I haven't test this bit, but according to Netscape's official review guide, it can now easly import messages from other softwares.)
