My PC running XP Home won't boot. I can get into CMOS set-up utility to try to reset so as to boot from CD and then try repair or re-instal , but I get a demand for a password and I don't know what it is. The PC maker who originally installed has gone out of business.
Is there any way I can work around this password problem ?

BIOS passwords can be reset by removing the CMOS battery (and leaving it without power for a few (3?) minutes). Obviously you'll lose any/all BIOS settings.

    solved !

Thank you both. I took the opportunity to put a new battery in, whilst I was at it.
