My problem is quite different from the thread before mine

I formatted my computer, installed Win2k Pro and updated all the hardwares I have in it like graphic card, scanner, and CD-RW.

The problem is that, I rebooted my comp after updating the drivers and now the E: (my cd drive) does not show up on my windows explorer or My Computer. On my right bottom corner at the quick start thingy, the Adaptec DirectCD Wizard has a cross on it and states "No supported Cd-R/Cd-RW Drive!" So went to device manager and updated my CD-ROM drive. But even after the update it was the same.

    Device status states :

"This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31)

Click Troubleshooter to start the troubleshooter for this device. "

Help, all my backups from previous window is stored in a cd.. I need to access the cd!

First thing I'd check after getting the latest drivers and still having problems (and double checking to make sure the drivers were the latest ones for the specific device - I've goofed that one before) would be to shut down and then remove & firmly reseat the cable.

    I've seen something similar...

I've seen something like this before but it was in Win XP. basically Adpatec CD Creator is worthless if you have a previous version v.2 or 3 not sure which. Anyway in XP it'll warn you that it's not compaitable and if you install anyway it'll disable your CD-Drives for your own protection anyway there is no way to recover from it that I was able to find other then a format and clean install. Since I couldn't even find drivers for my DVD ROM or CD Burner. I'd think that it's pretty common that they don't release drivers for such devices since they're just PnP. Anyway check Adaptec's site if you have a later version of the program I think they offer a patch if you don't... basically they say tough luck buy a new copy (which I think is total **** but hey that's just me ).

    Adaptec is the culprit...

I ran into this myself when I deleted v4 and installed v5. The fix came from uninstalling windows media player v? and installing v7. Good luck.

Thank you! Thank you! I was on the verge of losing my mind (not to mention my CD and DVD reader). Microsoft updated Windows Media Player "automatically" and broke my system. I hit remove Media Player and selected Adaptec and am now back in business. I don't see how I would _ever_ have found the problem and with no access to my CD reader I had very few options. You saved my week-end and I am deeply appreciative!
