Hi, I am using a Altec Lansing VS3251 5.1 speakers on a WinXP pro and i'm running it on a laptop with a Creative SB Live! 24bit external soundcard.
Somehow, the bass redirection for it isn't working when i switch to 5.1 or surround input.
My sub woofer won't have any sounds at all.

By the way, i've got a on board SigmaTel soundcard.

Hi, jAsOs. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

You might need to disable your on-board (SigmaTel) sound (via the BIOS?) before your SB card will work properly. Refer to your computer/motherboard manual for details about how to access and change settings in the BIOS.

CAUTION: Be careful when changing settings in the BIOS. It is reportedly possible to render your computer unbootable if incorrect settings are made in the BIOS.

Perhaps you can experiment with disabling the on-board (SigmaTel) sound hardware in Device Manager.

How to Access Device Manager in Windows XP
    =====================================

    Quick Method:
    1. Hold down the Windows key and press the Pause/Break key.
(The "System Properties" window will open.)
    2. Click on the "Hardware" tab.
    3. Click on the "Device Manager" button.

    Alternate Method 1:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click on "My Computer ".
    3. Select "Properties ".
(The "System Properties" window will open.)
    4. Click on the "Hardware" tab.
    5. Click on the "Device Manager" button.

    Alternate Method 2:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Click on "Control Panel ".
    3. Click (or double-click) on "System ".
(The "System Properties" window will open.)
    4. Click on the "Hardware" tab.
    5. Click on the "Device Manager" button.

NOTE: The "alternate" methods above may vary, depending on how one has Windows XP preferences configured.

Your sound hardware might likely be listed in the "Sound, video, and game controllers" section of Device Manager.
    • Click the "+" next to the "Sound, video, and game controllers" to expand your view of that section.
    • Right-click on the on-board (SigmaTel) item and select "Disable ".

While in Device Manager, look for icons (such as question marks or exclamation points) that indicate "issues ". If any "issues" are reported in Device Manager, then please tell us what those issues are.

The thing i find weird is, i have not disabled my sigmatel soundcard ever since i had the external soundcard because i use the internal one for my headphones.
And the bass redirection worked just fine until today.
I unplugged all the cable cause i needed to take my laptop off and the bass redirection just didn't work.

When you plugged the cables back in, did you make sure the cables are plugged into the correct sockets and plugged all the way in?

Typically there are 3 audio-related jacks (often color-coded) on a sound card that are all the same size. I think they are typically labeled as follows.
    • Microphone (pink)
    • Line-in (blue)
    • Line-out (green)
I expect the speakers should use the line-out jack.

Sometimes I have to pull out the audio cable slightly from my data projector to get the audio to work properly with it. Perhaps something similar needs to be done with your setup.

According to Wikipedia, there may be an orange jack on the SB sound card that may be used for the center channel/subwoofer.

    I got it working again!
Well what i did when i unplugged everything was just the USB cables, not the jacks.
But somehow my orange jack that connects my sub to the soundcard became loose, so i just plugged it all the way in and it worked!
    Thanks alot for the help!
