    Hello

I have done a fresh installation of XP SP2. When oppened the root
directory, I could see WIDOWS and WINDOWS.0 directories.
    WIDOWS is not protected
WINDOWS.0 which is biger by far, is protected.
I wish I know if I must have both of them in my new system or can delete
    WINDOWS. Please advise.

Click Start>Run and type cmd then hit Enter to open a command window.
In the command window, type set then hit enter.
Look at the value for SystemRoot and windir in the list. If it is C:\Windows.0 it is safe to remove the C:\Windows folder.

Thank you, noahdfear. Sorry being so late, but I had no internet connection untill now - problems with my ISP :-(
I did as you said; WINDOWS.0 was the SystemRoot directory, indeed.
