    Hello again,

I am runnng XP Home edition SP2

The cd I have borrowed is XP Professional, Version 2002 it doesn't say which SP but it does say "Includes SP1 ". Should we assume from this that it is SP2?

Can we use this cd to do what is required?

    Regards
    Peter

That cd is an SP1 cd. Being an XP Pro cd in and of itself is reason enough not to use it. You would need an SP2 Home cd to do it properly.

I'll see if I can dig up anything else to suggest, as I'm running out of ideas.

    Hello again,
    Just had a thought.
Although I don't know much about pc's, I offered to try and get a few issues fixed on this laptop (as the owner knows absolutely nothing about PC's)

I have thoroughly enjoyed trying to fix it with you assistance, learned a lot and I hate to give up, but it just occured to me that as there is nothing really on this PC other than what it came supplied with, Windows and Norton(there is no MS Office, Word, Excel etc so no personal stuff only I-tunes which I can copy to disc and re-install) would it be easier and perhaps rectify any problems if I used the "Restore to New" function
    What do you think
    Regards
    Peter

    Hi Peter,

The 'Restore to New' option is quick and painless, and while I've thoroughly enjoyed attempting to resolve this problem (I like a challenge), it wouldn't bother me a bit if you made that click. :D
