I've finally had to resort to using dial up internet, but my modem reports no dial tone. I can successfully query the modem, and I have the correct drivers installed. I've tried to change what port it is on (currently COM 3), and I tried to verify that COM 3 is enabled, however, there is not even a Ports section in Device Manager. Please help! I know the phone line is good...

Need a few answers to questions ..
    What operating system ... Vista / XP / w98 / w95?
Which of the following three choices ...
    A) Modem is built into motherboard?
    B) Modem inside computer in a PCI slot?
    C) Modem is external?

Also you say "resort to dial up ". Not that anyone wants to be on dial up, how was the computer configure prior to this??

Sorry should have included more info...

    Windows XP (legit not hacked)

Internal on board modem ( "Toshiba Software Modem" per device manager)

I've always used wireless networks, or direct ethernet connections when necessary, but the modem has always had this problem..I don't know if it's a configuration issue or hw or what...but shouldn't the COM Ports still at least show in DM?

BTW the computer is a Toshiba Satellite notebook (I can't remember the model right now...I don't have it with me, will post later if you need it) Thanks for the help!
