What happens when you try? It ignores you and trys to boot into Windows? It freezes? It restarts? It shuts down (although I think you would tell us :)).

The reaction of the computer is important with startup problems. Try to give us as much information as possible.

Can you give us some information about the computer?

Unless it is one single beep, it means there is a problem with the hardware.

You can look up what the beep sequence means, but mainly they deal with major hardware, mostly likely RAM, second most likely graphics, then maybe a CPU fault.

You should open the case and check that all the fans are running when you press the power button, including the fan in the power supply and if there is one on the graphics card. [Check for any large buildup of dust like under the CPU fan].

It may just be a matter of disconnecting and reseating connectors. You may want to have someone help you with this or read through the system building instructions in the motherboard manual (don't disconnect the fan/heatsink from over the CPU).

Read about how to "Clear the CMOS" and maybe replace the CMOS battery.

hi mattman, its when yuou go past the first switch on beep, its when you see the press del to enter setup (the bios) page, you press and hold del key you get the rapid beeps then stops when it reaches the veryfying pool data page.except it just gets a black page the one between del setup and pool data pages and just freezes on that bit.hope this highlights the problem, cheers andsaw. ps the system is only 4 monthes old and theres no dust

You wll need to press Del before the first (single) beep. A single beep means that the "checks" (POST) have been made. This is the point were the BIOS hands control over to the operating system. You will not be able to get into the BIOS settings after the first (single) beep. I start tapping the Del key rapidly after the first second or two.

To stop the "recycling" go to the Startup Options Menu, where you boot into Safe Mode (F8), there you will see a selection about restarting on an error, select it. Next time, it should stop at the blue screen. Tell us the details of the message.

What do you hope to find in the BIOS settings (Del)? I would suggest using the "Setup Defaults" selection.

If you have any added hardware connected (like extra PCI cards), disconnect them until you get into Windows.

hi matt, thats exactly what i do except it freezes on black screen prior to entering the bios,im hoping to find the bit where i can use the setup disk to be the primary load rather than have hard drive first then cd rom and the disc if you understand that,i have already removed graphics card even disconnected dvd drive also wapped my original 1gig ram.when i get into f8 i have the following options, returnto os choices, reboot, start windows normally, disable auto restart on system failure, debugging mode, directory services restore, last known good cofig, enable vga mode, enable boot logging, safe mod with command prompt, safe mode with networking, safe mode, no selection for restarting on an error in f8. hope this helps cheers andsaw.

Try some of the suggestions found here.

It sounds like you have a hardware problem.

Also try booting to the F8 boot options screen and selecting the VGA mode.

When you pulled the video card, did you re-enable any integrated video per the MOBO manufacturers instructions, if necessary?

    xp set up disc loop

hello matt, i have tried every combination there is possible to do in f8, and just goes back to into the loop again, all except for directory sevices restore mode, i get blue screen with the system will boot into safe mode and d s repair then goes to black screen with checkig file system :c, file was clean setup is restarting and then back to the loop. i had someone who know (hard to get hold of)to have a look ,this is what he did, couldnt boot any rescue type disk so had to disconnect the hard drive, managed to load, the test came back ok and i think he tested the memory,to which he said the memory was ok and the memory contollers was ok and basically your m/board is knackered as he told me the board is warped which i could see myself, and also its not the right case for the board as its a micro atx and that part of the board was not supported properly, i used to repair and test ethernet boards about 15 years ago so we both come to the conclusion that some or alot of the tracks on the boad either or all due to heat and unsupported board or connecting and unconnecting cables to the board has more than likely have cracked snapped etc rendering it pretty useless. but i think i know your going to agree .cheers andsaw

Could be a square peg into a round hole :D Do I need say more :) Edit: get yourself some good parts, do your research, it sounds like you can build a quite a good system. Don't take any short-cuts :)

Read here and run the calculator:
    http://www.journeysystems.com/?power_supply_calculator

You can download and read through the motherboard manual from Asus to give you a preview of the procedure. You may also see things to watch out for.

Let us know how it goes.

    Matt
