Two days ago I suddenly experienced problems with MS Outlook 2003 and my PC Shield antivirus program. When I tried to open Outlook I got the message "Unable to open your default email folders," and Outlook closed. While this was happening, a notice appeared from my antivirus program that signatures were corrupted. So I tried to update the signatures and run a scan, but it could not complete the scan.
At that point, I decided to try a System Restore, and I got the message, "System Restore is not able to protect your computer. "
My operating system is Microsoft Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.
My question is, "Why can't I run system restore? "

cullman - Welcome to the Board :)

Odds are that System Restore or your System Restore points are corrupted too - you may have a hard drive problem and I do hope that you have current backups of your data elsewhere.

You have checked that System Restore is turned on? - Control Panel > System > System Restore tab.

A couple of threads on the Board for starters, both essentially the same answer - give the solution a try - reinstall System Restore.

Note that a successful reinstall of System Restore is unlikely to have any Restore points available.

To continue on the hard drive line you should check out the integrity of the drive - run the manufacturer's disk diagnostic software ....

    System Restore problem

When I go to control panel and click on system, there is no tab for system restore.
The tabs available for me are General, Computer Name, Hardware, Advanced, Automatic Updates, and Remote. I recall at one time seeing a tab for System Restore, however.
Re: the Outlook problem, I just uninstalled and reinstalled Outlook 2003, but get the same message.

    Try reinstalling System Restore.

Locate the sr.inf file and right click it and select "Install. "

You will find it located in the C:\windows\inf folder.
