Does anyone know how to STOP IE from going to MSN's page not found web page when a site is not found. I don't want the idiots of Microsoft sucking my bandwidth for no reason. This just started happening to me after I did a repair to try and fix many of the other miserable problems with IE. Too many to mention here.

I've tried setting the Do Not Search from the address bar option ... but it did no good. I hate microsoft ......!!!!!!!

The version of Windows and Internet Explorer you are using would be helpful.

Click View, Explorer Bar, Search. Customize from there to get whatever search page you want.
How, pray tell, would you prefer to be notified that a page is unavailable?

Well, I know I'd prefer the dancing hamsters singing "We can't find it and we don't care." :D

    I should clarify I guess ....

It's not setting up a search page I want. What is happening is, when I reach a page that 'is not found', the standard 'page not found error page' comes up for a millisecond before it redirects to MSN's horrible search site. I don't want to go to bloody MSN. Does this happen to anyone else or is it just me?

This started happening after I repaired IE ...... cause it runs like ****. I've tried everything, I've deleted the history (through DOS), cleared cache ...... repaired ...... rebooted ..... nothing helps.

I thought if I went back to IE 5 it would reset what ever settings that it had changed so I can get back to where I used to be......... No chance. ........ I think I may just have to start all over .....

It has never happened to me. It just stays on the "Page not found" page. But then, I have never used any other option in Internet Settings but "Just display results in the main window ".
    I like MSN search, anyway.

I like MSN search, anyway, though the dancing hamsters, or dancing babies, would be fine, too.

Tools - Options - Advanced. Under "Search from the Address Bar" check something other than "Just go to the most likely site ".

Abraxas, I would just like it to be the default page of page not found. The reason being that if I make a small mistake typing or something, I can just back it up and type say the proper subdomain name. When it redirets, its got the redirected line with the wrong URL at the end...... its a pain in the ass.

This is so annoying. I've checked through mircosoft and found nothing on how to stop redirect pages. Micrapsoft is by far the worst programmers in the industry. They all just work on advertising ..... go there .... buy thier **** ........

Well, I think I'm back to Netscape .....

I do understand your problem--and the annoyance of not being able to change a single letter to get to the right page. Please don't take my feeble attempt at humor the wrong way. But, I don't have a solution if you have tried all the options under "Search" in Internet Options.
This still occurred after a reinstallation, so it is all the more mysterious. It would seem something else may be affecting IE.
This suggestion is somewhat feeble as well, but try running AdAware to see if anything has messed with your browser search functions:

See my post above! This is from Uncle Bill:

Deselecting "Just go to the most likely site" will be sufficient to prevent the redirects. Selecting "Do not search from the Address bar" will prevent any and all automatic calls to MSN.

Well thanks for everyone's help. I think the do not search option worked. I didn't think it did work ...... I didn't realize I had to reboot the whole machine. I set the option and shut down IE ..... started it up ...... it still wasn't there ...... dah on me.

Anyway, between the MSN search page problem and now. A new problem cropped up. Boy was I getting frustrated. Now, when a page wasn't found ...... it was redirecting to www.ignkeywords.com ...... where the heck did this come from. I found out it is some sort of spyware I picked up somewhere. I didn't know what was going on cause I made so many changes ....... well, I tracked down the place and got an uninstall utility. Woo hoo ...... my page not found is back!!! ...... How nice to see :)

Well here is the site that installs this keyword search ****. Maybe some people like it .... but not me:
    http://www.igetnet.com/

So I finally seem to have everything back to somewhat normal.

Thanks again for eveyones help :)
