I'm assuming you've tried from an open IE window. Did you try from the Internet Options in the Control Panel?

Is Spybot Search & Destroy installed? It has an option to lock the IE control panel.

Highlight and copy the contents of the code box below.

    Code:

    cd desktop
    reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /s>>policies.txt
    reg query "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies" /s>>policies.txt
    start notepad policies.txt
    exit
    cls

    • Now click Start>Run and type cmd then hit Enter to open a command window.
    • Right click in the command window and select Paste.
    • The command window will close on it's own and a log named policies.txt will open.
    • Post the contents of that log here please.

You did fine. Lets look in another location. Repeat the procedure with the following code box.

    Code:

    cd desktop
    reg query "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Restrictions" >policies.txt
    start notepad policies.txt
    exit
    cls

    inetcpl.cpl

Let me know what happens (the IE control panel should open)

No need for Spybot. Please run adminchk.exe and post the log it creates. You can click Open on the download dialog if you don't want to save it.

If you're able, please logon to one of the other above accounts and see if the Internet Options control panel opens. That will help to narrow down the problem to being user specific or global.

If this started with removing Norton, I recommend you first re-install it and see if it fixes the problem(s). If it does fix it and removing NAV again has the same effect, we'll have a better chance of tracking down the problem.

Quite a number of infections showing in that log. Please read this topic, install the latest version of Hijackthis, run a scan and save the log (you can close it for now). Then, download and run Deckard's System Scanner and post BOTH the main.txt and extra.txt logs in a new topic in the Removing Spyware & Viruses forum. You may be required to put them in sepearate posts due to character count limitations.

    I'm closing this topic.
