Hi, When I click on the Index icon, in the "Help and Support Center" of Windows XP, all I get is a red x. I cannot access the Index, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks Jim

No Index when I click on the Index icon?????????

Hello again, Well I reinstalled the Help and Support Center in Windows XP a number of times and it didn't change anything. I noticed that none of the processes that you listed to stop were there when I started and they were not there when I finished, also I don't think after they installed, if they did?, they registered correctly. I am really confused with this one? The issue that your suggestion addressed is exactly what's going on, but it did not work. Any more Ideas will be more than welcome. Could this be caused by installing a fresh download of Internet Explorer 7.0? Thanks , Jim

No Index when I click on Index in Help&Support Center

Hi PeteC, I reinstalled the Help and Support Center and it did not change anything. When I click on the Index icon I still get no Index just a red x. I noticed the Help processes that I was to stop for the reinstall, were not there, and they were not there after the reinstallation. Does that matter? From what I understand the problem could be a couple of different things, is that so ? Any further help would really be appreciated. Thanks, Jim

The processes noted in the URL ....

    helpsvc.exe
    helphost.exe
    helpctr.exe

will not show in Task Manager unless Help and Support is running so there is no concern that you did not see them there.

Google shows a few hits on this - some unanswered ......

Did you use EasyCleaner or some other registry cleaner prior to the problem arising?

    http://www.dougknox.com/xp/utils/fix_windows_xp_help.htm

The Microsoft response is very deep and complex and seems to refer to IE 6 ....

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888534
    A simpler outline here ....

    http://windowsxp.mvps.org/helpctrindex.htm from which ....
Beyond the above I can find no other possible solutions.

    No Index Yet!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks PeteC, I tried everything you listed and nothing worked. However I do believe the fix is in the last url you listed. I tried it, but could not install it, because I have SP2 installed on my computer. Evidently it only works on computers that do not have Sp2 installed. I suppose I could uninstall the Sp2 then install the fix and then reinstall the Sp2. Sounds like alot to do to fix a small problem, will have to think it over. Thanks for your help, Jim
