Intermittently (about once a day) when I scan various news sites such as news.yahoo or money.cnn, the cpu goes to 100% and freezes up. Iexplore goes to 100%, then if I delete thru the taskmgr, dwwin goes 100%, and then explorer does the same. I've run all the usual virus scans, spybot, adaware etc and find nothing. I'm running XP-Home, 2gb ram, and cpu rarely goes over 40-50%. HijackThis log follows. Please advise any help appreciated.

    Hi robls99,

Scan again with HijackThis and place a check next to the following entry.

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\system32\userinit.exe,,SKEYS /I

Close all other windows then click Fix Checked. Restart the computer.

now, please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

Click Scan Now and Accept the agreement. You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will program will start and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.

Post the Kaspersky log and a fresh HijackThis log.

    Dave,

Thanks for prompt reply and detailed instructions. Everything ran fine until the end. The first run showed:

    Scanned = 169704 (169687)
    Viruses = 6 (2)
    Infected = 9 (2)
    Suspicious = 6 (2)

.. but there was NO "Save as Text" and at the bottom of the status bar it said "Error on page ". I even looked in Help and looked at "Stop Scan" which just warned me about saving the log but couldn't find any Save function.

Since I had run it over night and turned off AVG and Pest Control but forgot about my scheculed One Stop Button and back up, I thought I would run it a 2nd time during the day. The numbers above in () are what I got this time but still got the "Error om page" and no Save button.

    Help!

OK, lets do a bit of house cleaning then run another tool.

Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
    • Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Check the boxes to the left of:

      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All Users Temp
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
      • Recycle bin

    • The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
    • Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK then exit.
    Reboot

Download Dr.Web CureIt, saving the file to your desktop.
    • Doubleclick the drweb-cureit.exe file and Allow to run the express scan
    • This will scan the files currently running in memory and when something is found, click the yes button when it asks you if you want to cure it. This is only a short scan
    • Once the short scan has finished, mark the drives that you want to scan
    • Select all drives. A red dot shows which drives have been chosen
    • Click the green arrow at the right, and the scan will start
    • Click 'Yes to all' if it asks if you want to cure/move the file
    • When the scan has finished, in the menu, click file and choose save report list
    • Save the report to your desktop. The report will be called DrWeb.csv
    • Close Dr.Web Cureit
    • Please post the contents of DrWeb.csv here

    Noahdfear,

    Thanks for your patience.

I followed your instructions and ran the ATF clearner and both the short and long versions of CureIt and there were NO errors reported.

Needless to say, I am slightly uncertain where I am at??

Pending your reply I will be going out to dinner shortly and plan to run another Kaspersky to see what it shows.

    Rob

It's quite possible that KAV was hanging up on temp files. Lets see what a new scan does. ;)

    noahdfear,

    I give up!

My 3rd run of Kaspersky was similar to the first two with only a minor differences in the 3 numbers. Maybe Kaspersky is super sensitive and somehow picking up some of my small start up routines as errors?

I'd sure like to know where the Save As Text option is supposed to be located?

I guess I'll just have to wait and see if my IE7 problems repeat or not.

Thanks again for all the help!

    Rob

Download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) and save it to your desktop.
    • Close all applications and windows.
    • Double click on dss.exe to run it and follow the prompts.
    • When the scan is complete, two text files will open; main.txt, which will be maximized and extra.txt, which will be minimized.
Post the contents of main.txt only for now.

Looks like you're running Microsoft Serial Keys, which makes the following entry OK.

    F2 - REG:system.ini: UserInit=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\Userinit.exe,,SKEYS /I

    Can you verify?

I see AVG and Symantec. Safe to assume the Symantec processes are not antivirus related?

    Are the following files/folder legit?

    C:\ANN
    C:\ann.bat
    C:\an.bat

Appears to be some services left behind that point to the D: drive. Is that a cd/dvd drive? Are they driver install related maybe?

    S3 GMSIPCI - d:\install\gmsipci.sys (file missing)
    S3 MSICPL - d:\install4\msicpl.sys (file missing)
    S3 NTACCESS - d:\ntaccess.sys (file missing)
    S3 SetupNTGLM7X - d:\ntglm7x.sys (file missing)

To remove those, paste the following lines on the Start>Run line, one at a time, hitting Enter after each.

    sc delete GMSIPCI
    sc delete MSICPL
    sc delete NTACCESS
    sc delete SetupNTGLM7X

    1. I don't know what Serial Keys are. I googled it but still don't really understand. Please advise

    2. Yes, Symantec are not virus related

    3. Three Ann/an files are ok

    4. D:drive is my cd rom

    5. I deleted the 4 s3 files per above

When do you take a day off?

    LOL. Rarely.

Serial Keys - alternative input devices, eg; serial mouse, RS232 communications, etc.

If you open the Control Panel>Accessibility Options, then click the General tab, you will see the option to Use Serial Keys. If checked, it's enabled. Click the Settings button and you can then select a Communications port and set the baud rate (rate at which data is transfered) to be used.

I don't see anything else in your log that would cause me to be suspicious. Is IE behaving?

Serial Keys are enabled, com1/300 baud.

I use a wireless KB and mouse tho in emergencies I connect a corded mouse. I also use a built in 56k modem only in emergencies.

It's a little too soon to know the results but I'll definitely post back in a couple days with a report.

If you wore a dress, I'd give you a big kiss for your help and extreme patience but I guess you'll have to settle for this: :):)

Ummm, what's connected to Com1? Sure you need Serial Keys enabled? 300 is a very low baud rate, BTW.

    Thanks for the :):) ....... I ain't puttin on no dress :p

Is there an easy way to check if anything is on it, else I can turn it off?

Easiest way is to look at the back of your computer. Com1 is generally the 9 pin connector, which looks similar to the connector where your monitor hooks up. You should see a DB15 (15 pin) for a monitor, a DB25 (25 pin) for a printer, and a DB9 (9pin) for serial communications. Newer motherboards generally have them grouped together, while older motherboards did not have a DB9 and instead required the use of an add-on card.

Tks, I only have the usual stuff plugged in, I guess I'll turn com1 off.

    noahdfear,

Just to report back, the problem has largely disappeared. I've only had one problem a week the last 2 weeks and not even sure it is the same thing. About a week ago I also deleted a small startup program CallingID that I suspected might be contributing to hang ups in IE.

    Thanks again,

    Rob
