Now this is strange so I will give the background.

I want to use my USB connected Microsoft wired mouse.

When I connect it to the system via the port it identifies it as a USB Intellimouse Optical but then says 'can't find drivers' or in some occasions it says 'found drivers but can't install "

Now when I go to the Device Panel, it shows my ordinary wireless mouse as part of a HID group but the new mouse is shown in 'other devices' but there are no drivers present.

Now here is the kicker, if I run UBUNTU 7.0 from a CD mind you so it is pretty generic, my main mouse works and when I plug in the MS USB mouse it works, in fact both devices control the cursor without even tallking about finding a new device, it just works.

Now as I checked thru the web all I see is the same comments over and over. Download and install 6.2 Intellimouse -- DONE

I think this is a Vista issue but what I would like is for somebody to try two devices on their system and see if they both work.

If only I knew what filename they were looking for I could help..

HP said to disable 'use legacy devices' -- No help

Any help would be most appreciated before I go more bonkers:eek:

Is any "helper" software installed for the wireless mouse? Look in the Notification (System) Tray for a program related to those devices. You could try uninstalling that software in Control Panel -> Programs and Features. The wireless mouse (and keyboard?) should run without the software, and then I would expect the wired mouse would start working. I expect both work in Linux because there is no associated software installed for them.

I would also uninstall the 6.2 Intellimouse software if it will work without it.

PS As a test you could try booting into Safe Mode and see if both work there. If so, that would confirm to me that third party software is hindering the new mouse being installed.

    Thanks

I messed around and then found out that Vista will only support vista recognized HID confirmed devices. I have an HP system only 16 months old and they send a ball type mouse but it made me think that if this mouse works because it did when I got the system, then it probably is that the others are about 4-6 years old.

Sure enough, plugged it in and it worked fine and it was a PS2 connector so I guess I was wasting my time with old mice or what ever the plural is (mouses)

Still I think I could have had a message rather than talking about drivers, saying the mouse was not supported.

Thanks again for the advise, much appreciated
