After starting up the computer, I have virus filling in the all the open areas of the screen with this: javacore.20080331.135706.316 in notepad format. All are the same.

I've done Spyboot, and adware, and norton full scans already.

May as well look for any other stuff that should not be there too, thanks.

    Here is the HTL:

    Hi h2ofwlr,

Not sure I understand what is happening. Are you saying the 'words' javacore.20080331.135706.316 are on your desktop, filling in all normally blank areas?

No, there are note pad icons, with the description as I had listed it. When you open it up, it is a blank page. So the little icons fill out the entire desktop. Appears it got in on march 31, 08 due to the date in the title. Anyways, it is javacore-whatever that is.

Do you by chance have the IBM Tivoli Monitoring (ITM) software installed?
What version of Java do you have installed?

I don't think so.... How would I find out what JAVA I have installed? I have a IBM T42 from 3.5 years ago if that helps at all.

Click Start>Run and enter the following.

    javacpl.cpl

If the Java Control Panel does not open, try this one.

    jpicpl32.cpl

Once on the Java Control Panel, locate and click About to find the version number. Get the build number as well.

A list of installed programs might be helpful here. Lets use HijackThis to produce one.
    • Open HijackThis to the Misc Tools section (if it opens to scan mode, click Config, then Misc Tools)
    • Click Open Uninstall Manager
    • Click Save List then Save
    • Once saved, it will open the saved list in notepad
    • Post the contents of the list here please

Please use HijackThis as described above to create an uninstall list, then post it here.

Update. The auto down loader of the java icons stopped last week for what ever reason. I do not know if like 1,000 were down loaded, and when I deleted 120 at a time off the desktop and they finally ran out or what happened. But am still conscerned of why it did to begin with.

And something is chewing up my memory on the HD. Loosing 300M a day. For example, opened up 800M the other day, now back down to 256M avl  Thing is I have only about 13 Gig of stored info, the rest is programs and what ever is using the memory. As I recall programs should account for less than 10G, so what is using up the other 9G? My intuition is there is a virus downloading ****. And yes Norton is updated daily along with weekly full system scan, and did the Spybot and Adaware the other week. Is there anything unusual or suspicious in the HJT log above?

Those javacore files were being created by the IBM 32-bit Runtime Environment for Java 2, v1.4.1 installed on your machine. They are the result of something gone wrong with Java ....... kinda like getting a Dr. Watson log in Windows when there is an application crash. Recommend you update your Java installation from here. Once the updated version is successfully installed, uninstall the old version. In anticipation of being asked, no, I'm not sure which download you want. Might be worth your time to give them a call for guidance. Contact 1-800-IBM-SERV (U.S. only), or register an account and get Personalized support online.

Now, there's a good possibilty that your space is being used up by System Restore points, Norton protected storage (if your version has that), temporary files and temporary internet files, and the like. Run disk cleanup or download and run ATF Cleaner by Atribune to clean up temps and recycle bin.

SpaceMonger should give you a pretty good picture of where the space is being used.
