I am running XP, and my antivirus software keeps finding 2 trojans in $recycle.bin. As this is a hidden system file is it safe to delete all the entries in this folder?

    Hello screamer!

Do not delete anything but wait for an expert to give instructions. I'm not one of the experts but I think that the folder $recycle.bin is part of the infection. If you delete anyhing, you will delete clues.

    Hi screamer,

Lets have a look at things before we do anything else. Please read this topic, install the latest version of Hijackthis, run a scan and save the log (you can close it for now). Then, download and run Deckard's System Scanner and post BOTH the main.txt and extra.txt logs here. You may be required to put them in sepearate posts due to character count limitations.

Thank you Christer and noahdfear for trying to help me, but I finally took the gung ho approach and moved the files into the recycle bin, rebooted and everything was working OK so I then deleted them.

Sorry to have wasted your time in taking this option when you were trying to help me.

Thanks for the update screamer. I would still recommend posting the requested logs though. Malware often comes bundled with friends ;)
