This is a new one on me. I have a user with multiple desktop icons in Windows explorer (see attached screen shot). Some of them look to be renamed icons for other objects, while others just seem to be duplicates of the standard desktop icon.

The user reports that clicking on different desktop icons takes them to different places (which supports the hypothesis that at least some of the icons are mis-labellings of other objects)

I'm hoping this is just a Windows hiccup and that a restart will clear it. However, as I've not seen this type of thing before, I wondered if anyone else has? In particular whether it might be a symptom of some type of malware infection.

I've never seen it myself but a search of the Google groups shows some others. The only answer I've found so far is that it can be caused by having the desktop toolbar in the taskbar enabled. Don't know if that's the case here or not but it's something you can check out.

Windows Explorer adds extra desktop icons

    Thanks Zander

I googled for a solution, but kept getting pages about setting up multiple desktops rather than specific problems about icons.

I'll see if the user has desktop toolbar enabled.
