I recently reformatted and reinstalled Windows XP and during the installation created a two usernames. After I finished installing I decided to remove(delete) one of the usernames and replace it (create) with a new one I THINK (repeat I think this is what I did and not simply RENAME the (0ld) username).
Now I find that when I get the logon the correct usernames are displayed for selection HOWEVER the OLD USERNAME (and NOT the new username) is used to store that user preferences etc eg C:\DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS\old username\....
I really would prefer the folder to be named the same as the (new) username.

Now before someone suggests that I simply delete things please note that I have set up the new username with a SPECIAL PROFILE (I edited the registry to MOVE certain startup programs from HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE to HKEY_CURRENT_USER so that the (new) user login starts up with a minimum of processes running (as people do for gaming, video editing etc).

Now what do I do to rename the DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS folder to be the same as the new (login) username.

Can I CREATE the necessary folder(s) (C:\documents and settings\new username\....) and copy the data across then REMOVE the 'old' folders AND EDIT the REGISTRY to change all occurrences of 'old username' with 'new username'? Or is there an easier method?

    Thanks

Thanks for the link however I don't think that is the answer.
    Let me elaborate
When Windows starts up (normal mode) it displays the following user names -
    John
    Video Editor

In C:/Documents and Settings there are folders for the following -
    Administrator
    All Users
    Default User
    John
Patricia (I had originally set up a user account named Patricia and then removed it and created one named Video Editor - very strange that there is a folder for the old user account created and removed but none for Video Editor).

(Username) Video Editor doesn't seem to have administrator rights even though when I go to Control Panel/User Accounts and select this account it seems set to Administrator HOWEVER when I boot Windows in SAFE MODE the ONLY usernames listed (for login) are Administrator and John so I can't login as "Video Editor" to "take ownership ".

    What do I do now?

You can't do anything, That's the (wonderful) way windows works (wwww) :D

The only way is to delete the account (save any files you want to keep) from the User Accounts Control Panel applet. Choose to Delete all files from the account.

Now make a new account with the name you want.

    Thanks Arie,

Will that leave entries in my registry for the old username (Patricia) or will they be removed (I hate junk in the registry)?

I also noticed that when logged in as "Video Editor" when I display PROCESSES (Ctrl + Alt + Del) the username is displayed as Patricia after I have selected Video Editor to logon.

The only reference I found to the deleted user in the registry was in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ DocFolderPaths

I suggest just making a completely new user, logging in under Admin, and then overwriting his folder in Docs and Settings with the folders from the Patricia one (do not overwrite the NTUSER.* files).

Either way, if you want to make sure a user is set as an administrator and you are using XP Pro, go to Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management->Local Users and Groups->Users. Right click on the user and hit properties. Go to the "Member Of" tab, and make sure that ONLY "Administrators" is listed. If "Users" or anything else is under there too, delete it.
