everytime i click on one of my icons to open up a program i get this message:16 bit MS-DOS Subsystem
    C:\Documents and settings\Matt D. G.\Desktop\norton 360.Ink
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
    CS:0dcd IP:010b OP:c6 5e 0f da 68 choose 'close' to terminate application.

And then gives me a choice to either close or ignore

Im sorry I know this is an amatuer question to all of you computer whiz'z out there, and im sure im not even posting on the right forum either. As you can see my computer skills are very limited. I really just surf the net, play games and write reports on my computer, so it's not a life or death situation. I'd really appreciate some help though.

Im bowing down to all you nerds. "IM NOT WORTHY, IM NOT WORTHY "! Please help, thanks a bunch

I was able to save hijackthis in my program files though.

At what exact location did you save HJTInstall.exe file?
In Safe Mode, are you able to go Start>Run?

i ran my comp on safe mode. i went to start>run and i typed in C:\programfiles\hjtinstall.exe

hijackthis popped up and asked if i wanted to run it. I clicked run and the NTVDM CPU has encountered... popped up again.

did'nt work, I tried on safe mode also. Everytime i go to start>run and try to run a program, it pops up. I'm sorry but i forgot to mention in my original post that along with 16 but MS-DOS subsystem pop up, I also get a black window pop up entitled "C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\spools.exe ".

    spools.exe is a Trojan-Downloader.Win32.Agent.jjt
I'm afraid, you're facing reformat, and Windows reinstall.
    I'm out of options.

Take a look at the following post ... see thread #4
I think what you're referring to is NTVDM CPU, not NTDVM CPU

matthewgz1985 sent me a private message regarding my post. My response.

As Broni pointed out, your path / file name .....
"C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\spools.exe ", suggest this is a virus. You could read / post at the following Windows BBS forum, Removing Spyware & Viruses for additional suggestions / solutions.

Surely, give it a shot at Removing Spyware & Viruses forum, but since you're not able execute any program from any mode, it's a tough situation.
In case, you need to reinstall, there is a very nice tutorial with screenshots, here: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html
