    Hello,

XP stops on logon welcom screen: I clik on the username, seems login in then save setting and go back to the welcome screen.

I've searched on the net for a solution but in vain; I found the following
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892893 but did not do the job.

I read about something like ERD and similar but couldn't find my way.

    Please advise.

    Thank you

Press the F8 key repeatedly when the first boot screen fades at POST time and you will get a boot options screen. Select to boot the last known good boot and it may fix your problem.

If not, do it over and select to boot to Safe Mode. Then when it boots, go to System Restore (assuming you had it enabled) and select to return to a date prior to the problem.

If none of that help, post back any error message you may get or any other info that you observe that may be helpful.

    Welcome back Pete,

Actually System Restore will run fine from Safe Mode. :) I never use it or have it enabled so I had to check that before posting back. It worked on my test dummy system so I assume it will do so on all other rigs if they can get into Safe Mode GUI.

As an aside, SFC will not work in Safe Mode. Just learned that recently.

    I stand corrected :)

However the MS KB article I posted seems to be somewhat anomalous .....

    and.....
The implication being that Safe Mode and Safe Mode with Command Prompt are different, although clearly Safe Mode is initiated in both cases.

Maybe I was away too long :)

Hi and thanx for your fast reply.
I forgot to mention that I cannot log in even in safe mode.

I found the following on another forum which solved the problem for the guy who wrote it:
    quote:
Using ERD and Regedit, I've changed from
    C:\Windows\System32\Wsupdater.exe,
    to
    C:\Windows\System32\Userinit.exe,

I read a little bit about ERD but it seems that this disk is specific to each computer and therefore I am not being able to solve my problem; I mailed the person who wrote that solution and waiting for his reply.

I found out about something called Winternals ERD but it seems that microsoft bought it and it is not free anymore; I am checking now something called Hiren's Boot CD..

It seems that I need a boot CD that allow me to log in then probably editing the registry as mentioned above could solve my problem before deciding on resinstalling windows.

What could you advise about ERD, Winternals ERD, Hiren's or any other free utility that can do the job?

    Thanx a lot.

Put your XP install CD in the drive, set the BIOS sequence to poll the CD-ROM drive first, and boot to the Recovery Console. Press R when asked and select the system to repair by typing the number shown and press enter. If asked to enter a password, just press enter or else if you have an admin. PW, enter it.

From the command line, type chkdsk /r and let if complete the disk check for errors and media faults. It will take several minute, depending on your drive size and data amount. When it finishes, remove the CD and type EXIT and press enter to reboot. Pray.

ps. I assume you have no backup image or else you wouldn't be here. ;)

Forget the boot CD for allowing a log in to edit the Registry. There is no such animal that I know of. You can make a Ubuntu live CD or a BartPE boot CD but even then you can't log on to Windows and edit the Registry. There are some things you can do with them that we may get to later.
