Use the graphics card manufacturer's software to make changes to resolution (aspect ratio?), not Windows Display settings. There may be an icon for the manufacturer's program in the Notification Tray or an nVidia card may have a selection by right-clicking on the desktop.

Check that the monitor is being detected correctly, it should be listed in the settings with the make and model or maybe Plug and Play Monitor, but not Default Monitor.

Is the selection you are making at or near recommended settings? If you use high resolution, you may need to use a lower the refresh rate. I would expect Windows may be having trouble running the setting.

You may need to reinstall the graphics drivers/software or look for an updated version. If you change versions, I recommend uninstalling the old version first in Add or Remove Programs.

Check the specifications for the monitor (a quick way is to put model number and the word "specifications" into a websearch). Find the aspect ratio.

If it wide screen, it is probably a ratio of 16:9 or 16:10. Use resolutions in those ratios. Where you change the resolution, you should be offered Refresh Rate settings, select a lower Refresh Rate.

Find the manual for the monitor. Check what settings are possible. For example, the "native" resolution for my screen is 1680 X 1050, but I like things a little larger so I use 1440 X 900. I also need to reduce the Refresh Rate.

It seems the settings you are making are not able to be reset at startup, so you will need to use "easier" settings for the system to handle.

*In the settings, is there an Apply button? If you just click OK, the settings will be lost at restart.

Onboard graphics may not be exceptionally powerful. If you are making settings that are outside it's capabilities it will keep reverting to "safe" settings. Try reducing the refresh rate, that should allow you to set higher resolutions and colour settings. The refresh rate can be lowered until you notice any "flickering" of the screen.

k well.. i never did a search for monitor specifications but if i set my monitor to anything other than 1440x900 and ratios of that nature... it will turn the screen black and the monitor will say it doesn't support it and to go to 1440x900.. and so i do and i will hit apply.. also i have tried changing it in the manufacturers software to.. either way it returns to default... the thing is it never did it when i was with XP sp2... it was just once i went to SP3 that this whole ordeal started.. btw this is what some would say "a test machine" for sp3.. i have pretty well nothing else on this OS so i can't see it conflicting with other programs...

Your testing may have revealed results you were not hoping for. You can try finding updated (recent, for SP3) drivers/software for the onboard graphics adapter at the motherboard manufacturer's website. If they are not available, you may have to wait for them to become available.

New, SP3 compatible, graphics drivers may be available at the adapter manufacturer's website. So, for example, it may be based on ATI, S3 or Intel, etc. For information, model number, etc, go to Start -> Run and enter dxdiag, Display tab -> Device. Look for updated drivers for your model at their website.

You may want to try a complete uninstall and reinstall of the graphics.
If so, I suggest you boot into Safe Mode and run the uninstall there.

You mention the monitor drivers. Check at the monitor manufacturer's website for any updated drivers.
