I installed a WinXP Pro with Virtual PC 6 on a Mac G4 with OSX 10.4 allotting 512mb memory. I couldn't open the Device Manager to check and see if all the devices are working. I get an error message from mmc.exe saying "The application (device manager I guess) failed to initialize properly 0xc00000d1. I wonder what this message means and what I could do to get into the Device manager.

    Hi Moorty

Are you sure you got a complete install?? Were there errors or skiped files?

I don't think you got a good install.

mmc.exe is the Microsoft Management console and not the device manager itself.

The mmc ties all of the different MMC's togather and executes them. You probably have deeper issues even if you could get by this one.

    Try this
    Start-run
    type (or paste this)
    devmmgmt.msc
    click OK

If it does not run I think you neeed to do a XP repair install.

Even in Virtual PC a repair install is done the same as a standard repair install.

You could do an sfc /scannow

before the Repair install but I would go stright for the repair install.

Device Manager failed to initialize properly

Thank you, MFlynn, for your answer. I have tried today two or three times to reinstall Windows, but I am afraid it didn't go through. One time, it almost finished, but then it failed to reboot. The second and third time it was worse. I am just about ready to give up. The Windows on the Virtual pc seems so slow anyway, especially on the Internet. Of course, I was using the dialup -- but that's another issue. Today I spent hours on the Mac machine trying to install airport extreme only to find out eventually that G4 and it are incompatible. I can't do it. Frustrations abound!

Of course, I have an alternative of running a network cord under the house, but that's a lot of work.

    But thank you again.

    Morning Moorty

Sounds to me like it may be too slow to use anyway.

There is a ver 7 Virtual PC for the MAC.

Another option to try would be to get a Virtual PC installed and working on a Windows installation then copy the Virtual machine (VHD and VMC) to the MAC Virtual PC.

    Good luck!

    Device Manager not initializing properly

Yes, it was at a crawling speed.

I know there is version 7 of virtual PC, but I heard it is not much faster than 6.

I will let it go at that.
