Hi!

Today when I tried to start my computer it gave a BSOD at the startup (just after showing welcome screen)

I got page_fault_in_nonpaged_area error with following tech info:
0x00000050 (0xF80F6660,0x00000000,0xF7BD971E,0x00000000)

I tried to restart few times but got the same error. Then I tried to start in safe mode - it started successfully. It also started in safe mode with networking.

Then I tried system restore to prev. day but it did not help.

I did following three things on the prev evening:
1. I took a backup of whole C: drive on an external hard drive.
2. Deleted lot of files from this external drive (before taking the backup)
3. Installed, played, uninstalled a game from yahoo games.

I am not sure if any of those things caused the trouble.
Please let me know how i can solve this problem.
Thanks. :)

From here:http://www.updatexp.com/stop-messages.html

Stop 0x00000050 or PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

The Stop 0x50 message indicates that requested data was not in memory. The system generates an exception error when using a reference to an invalid system memory address. Defective memory (including main memory, L2 RAM cache, video RAM) or incompatible software (including remote control and antivirus software) might cause Stop 0x50 messages.

Possible Resolutions:

* If you added new hardware recently, remove and replace the hardware to determine if it is causing or contributing to the problem. Run diagnostics software supplied by the hardware manufacturer to determine if the component has failed.
* Stop 0x50 messages can also occur after installing faulty drivers or system services. If the file name is listed, you need to disable, remove, or roll back that driver. If not, disable the recently installed service or application to determine if this resolves the error. If this does not resolve the problem, contact the hardware manufacturer for updates. Using updated drivers and software is especially important for network interface cards, video adapters, backup programs, multimedia applications, antivirus scanners, and CD mastering tools. If an updated driver is not available, attempt to use a driver from a similar device in the same family. For example, if printing to a Model 1100C printer causes Stop 0x50 errors, using a printer driver meant for a Model 1100A or Model 1000 might temporarily resolve the problem.

Hi! thanks for the reply.
I saw those links. But still can not figure out whats going wrong.
The problem is I did not really make any changes to the system.
I have not added any new hardware/driver to the system..

Also right now I checked if there is any problems with RAM by remove both of them and putting one at a time and seeing if xp starts - but xp still did not start.

Hope some one can help me out

Hi, niks. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

I'm guessing that game you tried might have mucked things up a bit. What specific game was it?

Please try repeatedly tapping the F8 key during startup until a screen appears that lets you choose from several boot options.

On that menu there should be a selection for "Last Known Good Configuration ". Does that work?

If that doesn't work, then can you boot into Safe Mode?

I think I had played two games ...each game I installed, played for an hour and then uninstalled:

1. Jo Jo Fashion Show
2. Build a lot

Both games I downloaded from games.yahoo.com
---
Yes I tried "Last Known Good Configuration" but it gave BSOD screen in that too.
As I said before I can boot in Safe mode as well as Safe mode with networking.

Up till now following things I have tried and tested:
1. Remove RAM and replacing one by one.
2. chkdsk r
3. stopping all non-microsoft services and disabling all startup options in msconfig
4. checked in device manager for any yellow exclaimation marks- none there.

Try the infamously ineffective sfc /scannow. You never know. It might actually work for something sometime.

Of course you would have already tried System Restore, if you had it enabled prior to the crash. Right?

niks, I'm sorry I missed your statement about Safe Mode.

I was also thinking along the lines of surferdude's suggestion to use System File Checker (SFC) but I am not sure whether it will run in Safe Mode or not. (I would try using System Restore first and then, if unsuccessful, try SFC.

• Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore

Perhaps Windows XP's System File Checker (SFC) will help you resolve your issue.

• Have your Windows XP CD handy because you may be prompted to insert it into your CD drive during this process.
• Click Start > Run...
• Type sfc /scannow in the "Open:" field.
• Click the OK button.
A "Windows File Protection" window will open and display its progress. If SFC runs successfully without any intervention from you, it will take approximately 15-25 minutes to complete. When SFC completes, the "Windows File Protection" window will simply disappear.

To see any changes that may have been made by SFC after it completes:
• Click Start > Run...
• Type eventvwr.msc in the "Open:" field.
• Click the OK button.
• Click the "System" item on the left side of the "Event Viewer" window.
Any changes made by SFC will be displayed (in reverse order) as "Windows File Protection" events between Event ID 64016 (Windows File Protection started) and 64017 (Windows File Protection completed).

Double-click on an event (or right-click on the event and select "Properties ") to view details about the event. You can use the up/down arrow buttons on the right side of the event's "Properties" window to view details about adjacent events without having to close the event's "Properties" window.

If you want to copy event details to your clipboard (for pasting into Notepad or a forum message, for example), use the button immediately below the up/down arrow buttons in the event's "Properties" window.

Okey I will try sfc /scannow right now.

Yes! I tried System Restore but surprisingly it only had restore point available for prev day and for today.
So i tried the prev day one.

• Microsoft: Windows File Protection may not start

Possible causes and steps for resolution are described on that page I linked.

EDIT: The page I linked is for Windows 2000. Might be the same steps for Windows XP.

You may need to restore that backup if possible. What format is it?

If you used a program that copies all system files, including the Registry hives, you have some hope of being able to copy the Registry hives from the backup after you rename the present hives. That would require a boot to a live Ubuntu or a BartPE CD so as to access the files.

As we have now found, sfc will not run in Safe Mode due to the catch 22 of not being able to start the RPC service that it needs. I'm surprised I hadn't run up against that before and am ashamed for suggesting it. Waste of time, sorry.

The backup software i used in bounceback express (it came with seagate external disk).
and yes it copies the whole C: so i assume even registry files.
but there may be problem with file system:
the external disk is in FAT32 while C:/ is in NTFS format.

my prev message did not post so writing again:
i tried what mailman said and the certificate is present in my computer.
Then i found a link on google where some one said scannow does not work in safe mode (because of its design).

The file storage system shouldn't matter if the software used a standard data copy routine. If instead it used a drive imaging method, then it might make a difference in that the restored image would end up being FAT32. I doubt that is the case this time.

I'm not familiar with Bounceback Express so you'll have to bone up on it and see if it can restore the drive for you. Frankly, it wouldn't be much of a backup software if it couldn't. ;)

As with any complete disk restore, there is always an element of risk since it wipes the drive prior to getting to work and if it fails you're left holding the empty bag.

I'd say give it a go since you have no other options that I'm aware of. It's your call though so do your homework.

Yup backup is just does normal copy data.
Okey I will try that tomorrow
but you mention "That would require a boot to a live Ubuntu or a BartPE CD so as to access the files. "

Now i do not have either of them.
Is it possible to do without them.
Also i was wondering is it possible to try to boot up with this external hard disk (though it uses usb to connect) just to check.

I did some reading on that bounceback express and it says "Effortless Restoration" so that sounds pretty good to me.

Forget the Ubuntu and BartPE and concentrate on learning about using bounceback express to restore your drive.

Read the full Bounceback Express hype here. Sounds good.
