Internet Explorer Script Error trying to print.

When I try to print something (yes, the page says, "Printer Friendly "), I get the following:

Please advise what I should do to correct this (remember I am a beginner at things like this).

However, after looking through the above articles, and if you are running IE 5.5 SP1, SP2 or IE 6. Go into Control Panel, then Add\Remove Programs. Click on Microsoft Internet Explorer, then click on Remove. Another window will open up. You will see an option named "Repair Internet Explorer ". Select that, then click OK. It will check your current installation of IE and see if you have any corrupt files or bad registry entries, reboot when it tells you to. If it says you have corrupt files, you may need to reinstall IE. If you do need to do this, hopefully you still have the folder named C:\Windows Update Setup Files on your harddrive.
Post back whatever happens.

 

I have to run setup again to reinstall IE, so my question is, "Can I reinstall over the old IE, because I tried that and I still cannot print a page when I right click ". I get the same message, "Permission Denied ". There are 16 errors, most of them stating, "Version 5.50.4134.100 of file --------.DLL exists, but the version needs to be greater than 6.0.2600.0." What is the best way to reinstall it? Should I go to the Microsoft website and download it?

 

You have a very bad case of versionitis. It seems you have IE 5.5 mixed in with IE 6. Which version of IE are you running and which version of windows are you running?

 

That's very possible that I may have both versions mixed...5.5 and 6.0. I did have 5.5 and then updated to 6.0. However, it appeared as though it was 5.5 that was being used. The reason I know this is because I was trying Netscape for a short time and every now and then, I was asked if I wanted to have IE 5.5 as the default browser. Tonight when I went to reinstall it, I figured might as well install 6.0. So first, I tried an update to 6.0 and it asked me if I wanted to replace what was there (6.0) and I said, "Yes ". When the problem wasn't solved, I downloaded the complete IE 6.0 thinking that would take care of it. When I checked in Properties, it showed 6.0, but it is not working properly. I am not on Netscape at this time.
Guess I made a mess, right?
I just noticed that in the programs shown in the control panel add/remove, I also have listed, "Compaq IE5 custom US v 1.0.04 ".
I am running Windows ME.

 

Do a Find on your hard drive for the file iexplore, be sure the Find starts at C:\ , so it goes through all your folders. Post back how many times it shows up and in which folders. You might have two separate installations of IE on your hard drive.
I am betting you now have an entry for "Compaq IE5 custom US v 1.0.04" and "Microsoft Internet Explorer 6" in your Add/Remove Programs.
It is not something you did, you could say it is Compaq+Windows ME.
You might have to uninstall the "Compaq IE5 custom US v 1.0.04" and then reinstall IE6 again. But hold off on that, and see if others have any other ideas.

 

Here's the scoop:
Checked in add/remove and found out I have both Microsoft Internet explorer 6 and also Compaq IE5 Custom US v1.0.0.4 just as you thought I would.
I also used "Search" to find the following:

Uninstall IE6 in Add/Remove. IE 6 is buggy, really. A lot of people have had problems with it. You will want the option Restore Previous Installation to do this.
Then, read this web page, they have the instructions you need to fix this from Microsoft. Just right click on these link, the blue letters, and select Open in a New Window.

In Method 2, where it says "In the Restore from box, click Browse, and then browse to the x:\win9x folder (where x is your CD-ROM drive), and then click OK "; instead Browse to the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder.

The alternative is to use the Emergency Recovery Disk that came with your Compaq computer. Put it in, shut down the computer so it is off. Turn it on, it will erase everything on your harddrive and put it back like it was when you bought it. Anything you have saved will be gone, though. You will need to save anything you want onto a floppy disk. You may have to reinstall your printer.
Or live with the printing error from IE.
Your choice.

 

Well, I am having a heck of a time.....I went to add/delete programs and the "Restore the Previous Windows Configuration" is not clickable (darkened). Only "Add a component or repair Internet Explorer" are available.
The next thing I did was try to back up my files with a backup program that I bought a few weeks ago and it would not accept my cd's....said they was "A defective or damaged area was found on media..." The drive has a clicking noise so there must be something wrong with that too...I'm sure it is not the cds.
As far as method 2 goes, where is the Restore from box? I don't understand that paragraph.
I was thinking of using the Restore feature but I checked and that new IE was added in January of this year and I would lose a lot of installed programs but at least not my files. I may have to try that route.
Also, since the f drive is acting up, I was thinking of taking it into the shop and have them check out the drive but tell them not to delete anything or use the recovery disk until I back it up.

 

Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
In the Search for files or folders named box, type iepeers.dll.
In the Look In box, click Local Hard Drives, and then click Search Now.
In the Search Results list, right-click Iepeers.dll, and then click Rename.
Type iepeers.old, and then press ENTER.

Click on Start, then select Run. Type in SFC then press the enter button.
In the System Configuration Utility dialog box, click Extract File.
In the Specify the system file you would like to restore box, type iepeers.dll, and then click Start.

When you click the Start button in the SFC program, another window will appear asking where to Restore the file from. Type in c:\windows\options\cabs. Where it says Save the file in type in c:\windows\system. Then click on OK.
Just hit OK if any other window pops up.

On the CD's did you get the right ones for your drive? There are CDR and CDRW.

 

I never got past the first part. When I clicked enter, I got the following message:
Error Renaming file or folder
Cannot rename iepeers: A file with the name you specified already exists. Specify a different filename.
So I assumed I should not continue with the rest of the directions.

 

I had forgotten one important thing about ME. It is called System File Protection, and it is working against you. You had installed IE6 and you ended up with Compaq IE5.5 files, the files that came with the original installation of Compaq's version of Windows ME. The version conflict you have. The new ones were immediately replaced by the old ones. This is the source of your problem. It will take a tech to disable it to get by this by using a null modem cable.
Did you install IE6 from the Windows Update Site or here?

It should have worked in any case, then again this is Compaq+Windows ME.

If you are having no problems using Netscape, stick with it. Your other choice is using the Emergency Recovery Disk. I cannot help you.

 

Possibly you are wondering whatever happened with my computer problem. Well, I actually didn't do anything all this time. A friend of mine had suggested sending my files to him and he would burn them onto a CD and send the CD back to me. Before I was able to do that, he developed problems with his computer so it never happened.

Then yesterday, I talked to one of the computer salesman where I bought the computer and asked him what he thought about me just downloading Internet Explorer 6.0 again. I bet right about now you are saying, "OH, no! Three of them ". Well we both thought, "What the heck...go for it ". This morning that is exactly what I did and, believe it not, I can print again and things seem to be working better.

Now I have to take it in to have the CD Burner fixed. Since it is making a clicking sound, he thought it was the mechanism that was bad. We shall see. I told him I do not want them to erase my files and he said since he worked in that department, he was sure if I paste a big note to the computer they would not do that. You probably remember that I could not copy my files because the cd burner was not working (as mentioned above).

I will probably post to here after I get the computer back; however, I want to go through my hundreds of messages so they do not get deleted if it would be gone too long.

That is good to hear. If you did it in the last couple of days, I bet you ended up with IE6 SP1, apparently they had a lot of problems, and did some fixes to it. I think your problem was one of them, they had quite a list of things they have done to it.

 

Hi there, I had read your last message sometime ago and I was replying to it when we had a power outage and never got back to replying. I am going through my messages now and saw the email. I wanted to tell you that you were correct in that the download was the latest IE6 SP1 and it has been working fine. I can't believe the mess I had on my hands.
