I seem to be unable to modify the Subject text in saved OE 6 messages. In Outlook XP I was able to edit this field and used the technique to make saved message subjects more meaningful. Am I missing something? TIA. Ed.

Are you saying that if you try to reply or forward a letter from a saved letter that the subject line is grayed out and you can't change anything in it? I can in mine. Give us the steps you are using so we can know exactly what is happening. Thanks.

No, Panda, the problem is filing incoming messages into folders with meaningful Subject text. (E.g., Amazon will confirm purchases with just an order number in the Subject; under Outlook XP I was able to modify the Subject text with a more useful description of the purchase for easier subsequent review).

I haven't found a way to do this under OE; there doesn't seem to be a way to open the Subject field for editing. It DOES open for editing when it is opened for forwarding, hence that is why I am using the rather inconvenient method of:

    (1) open the message for forwarding, (2) modify the Subject text, (3) send the message back to myself, (4) receive and file in the destination folder with the more useful Subject text.

Unfortunately, the header data no longer reflects the original sender data (though it does, of course, appear in the message body).

I'm basically asking whether anyone knows of some existing OE option to edit the Suject text that I've overlooked, or, whether someone has discovered a clever work-around.

    Thanks. Ed.

AFAIK, it cannot easily be done. It would probably be possible to edit the subject field within the .DBX file, however, this would probably be more cumbersome than the steps you are taking at present to change the content of the header field.

One option would be to save mails to a different folder (click File - Save As) and to name each mail as you wish when saving.

Your last suggestion was interesting. I manually tested: Save As Input message to a temp folder with revised Subject text string in file name, invoke an editor to replace the Subject text within the resulting eml file, open the eml file and specify Move Folder to intended destination folder. Everything seems to look the way I want it. Shouldn't be a problem to write a macro to do this fairly easily.

    Thanks for the idea, Brett!

Sounds like Brett has you on the right track. You might even consider creating special folders for different subjects and then just creating a rule that puts the right incoming message into the right folder. Then they will be seperated from your regular inbox mail and can easily be found in the correct subject folder. They'll also be intact, subject name and all.

Wrote a macro using Macro Toolworks which does the complete Subject modification in seconds within whatever folder from which it is invoked. Another annoyance eliminated; sure beats the previous procedure.

    Thanks, all. Paxtibi
