Clean the dust out of the air ducts plus the heatsink and fan. It's probably overheating the processor.

    Hi, snookie. :)

The heat sink is inside the laptop and is mounted on top of your Central Processing Unit (CPU). The heat sink is made of metal (probably aluminum or copper) and probably has fins on it (to allow maximum heat transfer from the heat sink to the air that flows between the fins). The heat sink likely has a fan mounted either on top of the heat sink or right next to the heat sink. The fan blows air through the heat sink (if dust is not blocking the air flow).

You should refer to your laptop manual or other documentation for detailed instructions about accessing/cleaning the CPU's heat sink, fan, and vents for the intake and exhaust air. Otherwise, you should take the laptop to a qualified service technician to have him/her perform the cleaning.

If you do not have detailed instructions at hand, then you might be able to locate such documentation at the laptop manufacturer's web site. If you have trouble locating detailed instructions, then please provide us with the exact model number of your Toshiba Satellite laptop so we can try to help you locate appropriate documentation.

CAUTION: Do not separate the heat sink from the CPU.

The following link will take you to your starting point at Toshiba.

Click the "TECH SUPPORT CENTER" section title in the upper-right corner of that page and select the appropriate menu items that specify your laptop.
    • Select Category: Portables > Family: Satellite > Model: A75-S229 and click the "Show Results" button.

I tried downloading the User's Guide last night (with dial-up) and went to bed. This morning I discovered there was an error near the end of the transfer.

If you are unsuccessful in locating detailed instructions for opening and cleaning your laptop, then please let us know.

I will be leaving town soon but I will take my laptop with me. I might pop in at Windows BBS a couple times while I am away.

    Clean the inside of dust

I had a friend with the same notebook and the same problem. His too would shut down shortly after starting it up and it was running really hot. When I had possession of it I noticed the air vent was blowing out air that was too hot in my opinion.

I took the unit completely apart and found **** all junked up inside. I blew out all of the dust and gunk from within. The unit was reassembled and has been up and running for over a year without one hiccup.

Later I come to find out the laptop spent a lot of time in my friend’s pizza restaurant. Over time it sucked in a lot of flour particles which was causing the laptop to basically suffocate which caused cooling to fail and eventually shut down the unit.

On a side note, I noticed many people having the same problem as you are which leads me to believe this is a design problem.

Hopefully this helps you out with your notebook problem.

This evening I successfully downloaded the .PDF User's Guide for your laptop.

Page 47 has general information about your cooling fan.
I looked through the User's Guide Table of Contents and used it to poke around a little in the User's Guide. I did not find any details about cleaning the interior of the laptop. :(

I also downloaded a couple addenda to the User's Guide and the detailed specifications, none of which give any details about accessing the interior of the laptop. :(

Laptops seem to me to be a bit more complicated than desktop boxes. Depending on how mechanically inclined you are, you may be able to figure it out. If you dare to embark on the uncharted territory, I suggest you keep careful track of which screws you remove (and in which order) and other such details so you have a greater likelihood of easily reassembling the laptop.

Perhaps you will find helpful information by using one of Toshiba's support options via the "CONTACT" link in the upper-right corner of the Toshiba support pages.

    Laptop overheating

Thank you Dud Gorgon and Mailman for you help. I do know that this model has been In the shop at Toshiba for a bad motherboard, among other problems. I know I will never buy another one. My fans are on the bottom. I keep the laptop ,always, on a cooling mat. Even when my other cooling mat died, I still kept it on there so that the air could circulate under It. The air that comes out from the side gets pretty warm. I know that a laptop Is pretty hard to take apart...at least the key board is....If you take that apart, I guess you have to take every key off seperatley? Anyway.....I will buy the spray In the can again and try that to blow out the fans. We will see what happens....right now Its not that hot....don't know why It goes In spurts.
    Thanks again;)

Thanks everyone for your help. Will be having a friend, Tech. person take my laptop apart and clean the heatsink. He feels the overheating Is another Issue. I did have, when this Toshiba was under warrenty, a new Motherboard put In....there was a problem with them overheating, and now the warranty Is off so we will do the cleaning and see If that helps...will let you know.
Like I said, will never buy another Satellite Toshiba again...so many problems.
