I have a Toshiba notebook and I wanted to upgrade my hard drive from an 80GB to a 160 GB. I used True Image to clone the 160 GB. I did not notice any problem until I wanted to go online. I have a dialup account. I could not get connected. After taking out my pcmcia USB 2.0 card and not having anything in the USB 1 ports I was able to connect. As soon as I hooked something into the USB 1 ports or put in the pcmcia card while connected to the internet I could not load any more pages. I am using XP Pro SP2 with both IE 7 and Firefox installed. I did reinstall my ISP software but that did not help. Do you have any idea how to fix this problem?

To me it sounds similar to a resource clash. Check in Device Manager when the problem happens and look for any problems.

Look for updated drivers for the modem at the laptop manufacturer's website. Check for other drivers, particularly the chipset drivers which may include USB controller drivers. Look for updated drivers for the PCMCIA USB card.

You may want to try disabling some of those devices (controllers) in the BIOS/startup settings for a few restarts. That may let Windows reorganise the resources.

    Matt,
Thanks for your reply. Booted into safe mode and into the device manager and uninstalled everything under universal serial bus controllers and rebooted. So far that seems to fix the problem.
