    Hi,
    My computer has been infected with an adware virus. I downloaded Spyware doctor, but it hasn't fixed it. Using the custom scan feature, I was able to determine the virus was in my registry. Here's my HijackThis log file:

    The virus keeps trying to get my computer to go to a Web site and download software, but the antivirus program (thankfully) has been blocking it. Here's the message the antivirus software sends when it blocks it: Spyware dr. has blocked an application Explore.Exe attempting to write to the registry HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-86843413-3906915375-489651319-1005\SOFTWARE\MICROSOFT\INTERNET EXPLORER\MAIN, START PAGE= "http:/softwwarereferral.com/jump.php?wmid=601 0mid=MiI60jg5lid=2 "

    How can I get rid of this?

    Welcome to Windowsbbs. :)

    Please do these in the order given.

    Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

    Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
    (Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)

    Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
    • Restart your computer
    • After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
    • Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
    • Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
    • Choose your usual account.
    • Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
    • Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
    • It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
    • Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
    • When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
    • Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
      (Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
    • Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new HijackThis log

    Now This.

    Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri) to your Desktop.

    Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe
    Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
    Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

    **If the tool fails to launch from the Desktop, please move SmitfraudFix.exe directly to the root of the system drive (usually C:), and launch from there.


    Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.


    Then this.

    Please download Deckard's System Scanner (dss.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
    Note: You must be logged onto an account with administrator privileges to complete the following.
    • Close all other windows before proceeding.
    • Double-click on dss.exe and follow the prompts.
    • When it has finished, dss will open two Notepads main.txt and extra.txt -- please copy and then paste the contents of main.txt and extra.txt in your next reply.

    Please post the “main.txt” log only for now.


    Please post the SDFix log, the Smitfraud Log and the dss log.

    It could take more then one post to show all of them.

    OK lets get a on-line scan.

    Please do an online scan with Kaspersky WebScanner

    Click on "Accept" If your pop "“up blocker blocks the ActiveX download, allow it, click on "Accept" again

    You will be promted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, Click Yes or Install.
    • The program will launch and then begin downloading the latest definition files:
    • Once the files have been downloaded click on NEXT
    • Now click on Scan Settings
    • In the scan settings make that the following are selected:
      • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
      • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
      • Scan Options:
      • Scan Archives
        Scan Mail Bases
    • Click OK
    • Now under select a target to scan:
      • Select My Computer
    • This will start the program and scan your system.
    • The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
    • Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
      • Now click on the Save as Text button:
    • Save the file to your desktop.
    • Copy and paste that information in your next post.

    Please post the Kaspersky results.

    OK, please do the following. in the order given.

    Please go to Start > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following (if present):

    Vonage


    Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore "), please delete these folders (if present):

    C:\Program Files\Online Services\Vonage

    Your PeoplePC Toolbar is showing up as Adware, which is no big surprise, and I'm not sure if it is required with PeoplePC, so at this point we'll leave it.


    Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer.
    • Save it to your desktop.
    • Please double-click OTMoveIt2.exe to run it.
    • Click on the CleanUp Button.

    Check to see if any of these tools are left on your desktop. if so delete them.

    We need to turn off and on system restore. There are infections in it and by using system restore you would reinfect yourself.

    You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
    Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.

    To turn off Windows XP System Restore:
    NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.

    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.

    4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

    To turn on Windows XP System Restore:

    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives. "
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK
    6. Make a new restore point.
    7. Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore.
    Choose Create a restore point and clicked Next, Under "Type a description for your restore point…â€put a name in the box,. Click Create. In the next window click Close.


    Now run a new Kaspersky scan and post the log.

    I deleted Vongo, as you suggested. Should I delete PeoplePC just to be on the safe side? Things appear to be running smoothly: The system performance has improved markedly since I began following your instructions, and I haven't been calling up virus-filled Web pages against my will.
    I'm deeply grateful for all you've done. You saved me from going to one of those places that erases everything on a hard drive to cure the problem.

    Is there anything else I should do, and do you have any recommendations for me to keep my PC virus-free?

    I thought you were using PeoplePC for your ISP?

    If you are not using them. then yes lets remove it.

    Using Windows Explorer (to get there right-click your Start button and go to "Explore "), please delete this folder

    C:\Program Files\Online Services\PeoplePC


    Download ATF Cleaner by Atribune and save it to your Desktop.
    This is a good tool to get rid of the temporary garbage you pick up while surfing the net.
    Double click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    Check the boxes to the left of:

    Windows Temp
    Current User Temp
    All Users Temp
    Temporary Internet Files
    Prefetch
    Java Cache
    Recycle bin

    The rest are optional - if you want it to remove everything check "Select All ".
    Finally, click Empty Selected. When you get the "Done Cleaning" message, click OK.

    All went well; just one question

    Geri,

    I deleted PeoplePC and used ATF-Cleaner successfully. However, in removing PeoplePC, I discovered I still had some of Vongo on my hard drive. When I tried to delete it, a message popped up saying that if I deleted it, some programs may not work. The PC seems to be working fairly well now: Should I just leave the Vongo program be or should I delete it?
    Everything else is fine: I plan to follow your suggestions on the preventive measures, although I haven't had a chance to implement them yet.
