I am trying to help a good friend install his new printer. He has windows XP Pro install in the computer. We went by the letter as to what the instructions said on how to install the printer. It is a brand new Canon Pixma MP210 all in one printer. We had to have tried over 10 times and can't get it. The computer says, can't find printer. I told him to delete any part of the software that did not complete the install and start a fresh, making sure the printer is disconnecte and turned off, then when the software ask to connect to the USB port and turn the printer on, do so. It sits there for a while searching I guess, then it returns with a message saying it can't find the printer. If anyone has any idea on how to solve this problem, please feel free to post.
    Thanks you in advance.

You are uninstalling in Add/Remove Programs, not deleting files?

Is there a possibility of software still being installed for a previous printer? Check in Add/Remove programs.

You can go to Device Manager, under the heading Universal Serial Bus Controllers, uninstall anything listed as a "controller ", they will be automatically reinstalled at restart. I expect that there should be a listing for an "Enhanced" USB controller. If not, either the drivers are not installed for USB 2.0 or the USB type is USB 1.1 (although the printer should work on a USB 1.1 system, but check the system requirements).

mattman, thanks for you reply. I know for a fact that the USB ports are ok, we tried other peripherals in the usb ports to make sure that they are working, we also changed cables to make sure that was not the problem. What I think is the problem and I have to wait for my friend to get home from work to try is, he had a older canon printer installed a few weeks ago before it went bad, and I think he has drivers and software from that printer still intalled. I have to check with him to make sure that is not the problem, if he does I think they may be a conflict there.
    Thanks again for the help.

I just can't get this printer going on this windows xp computer. I did what mattman suggest and the computer still does not recognize this printer. Tried it with HP notepad running vista and all was well. On the windows xp computer we went to the canon site downloaded fresh drivers, made sure any other printer software was completely removed from the computer and we still can't get it to install. I am completely stumped. Any other help will be greatly appreciated.

If you think another version was previously installed, that would be my suspicion. Some versions may not overwrite older versions. It may not be directly related to the drivers themselves, but the software associated with them.

I will set you off on a trek. Go to Canon website and look for an "uninstaller ". It won't help you much in the future if I end up finding it for you. Websearches may help, but I have a suspicion that Canon will have one. Many similar hardware manufacturers have "special" uninstallers for when the normal method won't work.

Some people search the system for the manufacturer's name and delete the findings. This also involves editing the registry and I try to avoid that as far as I can. I use the manufacturer's tools or instructions. I don't want registry problems to come back and bite me in the future.

Search at Canon first. Use websearches after that, but don't take any magic fixes as being correct for your system.

Post back if you are still stuck, I will be glad to help.

Edit: Ooh, maybe a method, boot into Safe Mode and uninstall there.

mattman, thanks for your reply. I will search the canon site for an uninstaller.
Did not know that they would have something like that. I tried deleting anything I could find in the computer with a canon name to it. I will try what you said and see if I can get this going. A million thanks for your help.
