Hi, Steve. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

What is the brand and model number of your problem printer?

Are the USB controllers OK in Device Manager?

Have you checked for updated drivers at the manufacturer's web site for the problem printer?

Is there any print on the paper or is it still blank?

Update: your printer is probably receiving some sort of a feed order? A little box in the setting windows might have been checked or unchecked by accident or even (un-) checked itself? I would look over my settings for page, change of paper etc. Links to some screenshots might give people in here a better chance to respond qualified? Perhaps someone will know what settings to change...

Drivers are updated. usb in device manager says working ok. Don't see anything in settings that would cause to print on bootup. hp site no help. Nothing prints just says printing and runs a sheet of paper through the printer. Hooked another printer up did print a little jiberish on that printer.
hooked usb cable from other printer that is working ok and still did same thing so don,t think its usb related.

    Some further thoughts .....

If the printer 'prints' when the computer is booted up this is an indication that the Print Spooler Service thinks that there is data to be printed.

Check that the Print Spooler Service is set to Automatic and that the Remote Procedure Call Service (RPC) is also set to Automatic and that both are started. I guess you will find that is the case.

So the Print Spool itself may be corrupted .....

Create a Folder - Print Spool - anywhere on the drive and under Control Panel > Printers & Faxes go File > Server Properties > Advanced and insert the new location for the Spool folder.

See if this solves the problem. If not - and it may not as the other printer behaves itself it may be possible that the printer memory is corrupt. Can you hook the printer up to another computer to check it out?

Check if there is anything has crept into Startup which may be causing this behaviour - msconfig, but Autoruns will give a lot more info.

I'm away for the next week and will check in on my return.

Hi Steve, I found this on HP web site:

    Issue
Some newer computers, particularly the Dell Dimension series, contain a feature that activates USB devices when the computer is turned on. The computer will send an activation signal to compatible USB devices, including memory card readers, then pause at a black screen to allow the device the chance to acknowledge the signal. USB printers with memory card readers may also print pages containing references to USB functions as well as other random text or spit out blank pages during this pause.
    Solution
Complete the steps below to resolve this issue.
    Solution one
Contact Dell Technical Support for troubleshooting and a resolution to the issue. Solution two is available in the event that Dell Technical Support cannot be contacted.
    Solution two
After the printer generates the pages containing usbcrut text, communication to the computer will be interrupted. To resolve this follow the steps below.
Use the On/Off power button to turn off the printer.
Disconnect the USB cable from the rear of the printer.
Disconnect the power cable from the electrical outlet.
Allow the printer to sit for at least 30 seconds.
    Reconnect the USB cable.
    Reconnect the printer power cable.
Turn on the printer using the On/Off power button on the printer.
    Solution three
To prevent this issue from occurring, complete the following steps:
    Shut down the computer.
Unplug all USB devices other than a keyboard.
Start up the computer. When the brand logo appears, press the F2 key to enter the System Setup (BIOS) program. If the Windows screen appears, wait until the computer finishes starting up, then shut down and try again.
Press the Down Arrow key to highlight Integrated Devices (Legacy Select Options).
    Press the Enter key.
Press the Down Arrow key to highlight USB Emulation .
Press the Space Bar until the option displays No BOOT .
Press the Esc key twice to go to the Exit menu.
Ensure that Save Changes and Exit is highlighted, and press the Enter key.
NOTE: One or more of the links above will take you outside the Hewlett-Packard Web site. HP does not control and is not responsible for information outside of the HP Web site.
I don't know whether this is your exact problem or whether your PC is the same as this info is supposed to refer to. I know from experience that HP printers do get confused in their memory bank when too much info is inputed too quickly. Lol. Neil.

Solution 3 worked for me. Thanks for taking the time to help me out. I can't believe i didn't see it on hp site.
Am just wondering what is the purpose of having
USB emulation on in the first place.

Hi Steve, time zones make a difference when checking back. Nice to see one of those solutions worked. Yes HP sites take a bit of figuring out - I've experienced it before. Thanks for feedback Neil.:D

Great input, Neil - glad to hear that the source of the annoyance has been isolated, Steve.
