I was infected with Virus Heat and Trojan-Spy.win32@mx. I used NAV and Windows Defender and seemed to have eliminated everything except for a flashing icon on the right side of the taskbar which goes from an X to a ? and every so often gives a popup window that says System Alert. It is in the notification area. When I click on the popup it gives a full screen asking me to download Virus Heat.
How do I get rid of this thing?

    Hi ackerberg :)

Download SmitfraudFix by S!Ri, saving it to the desktop.

    • Restart the computer in Safe Mode by tapping the F8 key upon startup and selecting Safe Mode from the Advanced Startup Menu. Logon to your account.
    • Double-click SmitfraudFix.exe to start the tool and press 2, then hit Enter.
    • You will be prompted 'Do you want to clean the registry?' answer Y (yes) and hit Enter.
    • If prompted to replace the infected wininet.dll file (if found), answer Y (yes) and hit Enter to restore a clean file.
    • Reboot to normal mode when the tool completes.

Post the contents of C:\rapport.txt and a fresh HijackThis log.

flashing icon is a symptom that some files of virus heat is still on your computer. as windows defender was able to delete virus heat partially, i suggest you update windows defender and run a scan again. i also have another idea. you may try to remove virusheat manually, it's not complicated however if you do it wrong you may ruin something on you machine easily. using SmitfraudFix might be better solution in this case. but if you want to try the other way here are manual virus heat removal instructions. hope this helps you a little.

Thank you for your replies. This is what I did. I ran NAV which eliminated something, then I ran Windows Defender, which eliminated more. Then I ran them both again in the same order. NAV found nothing and Windows Defender found more. I ran Defender once again and nothing was found. The flashing icon and popups were still there. I then ran Ad-aware which found a lot more. After that everything was back to normal, and I ran Ad-aware once more which found nothing except cookies.
Moral of the story. No one program seems to find everything and I guess you should run several of these programs if you have an infection, until everything comes up clean.
    Thanks again.
